My plumber saw my arcade collection in my garage when he was doing some work, and asked if I could fix his uncle's New Fruit Bonus '96 slot machine. It turned out the monitor (Tovis MTG-1901) needed a cap kit.

Definitely not my area of interest, but I'm a blue collar kid and I like to keep trades people happy, so I agreed to fix it.

Installed the cap kit, which went great.

Here's the issue: it was set on free play when I got it. There's a button on the top left of the cabinet that I pressed while testing (shown in the 2nd photo), and now free play is gone. I have since pressed that button repeatedly, held it down while powering the cab up, etc: nothing. I don't think it's a DIP switch issue (I never touched those), but I checked the manual, and I don't see an option there either. I also checked the service menu: nothing there.

Playing with cash works fine.

I think the button is some sort of free credit hack (I don't think the PCB supports that option), but I know little/nothing about these machines.

Would appreciate any thoughts from anyone who knows more about these machines than I do.

Thanks!

- Eric

Nice of you to do that! I've found most folks are very appreciative of the effort.

That malfunction statement seems obvious, if it malfunctions then it doesn't work?? Wonder what situation that's trying to avoid...

OK, mystery solved.

I called my plumber's uncle to ask about free play, and he said that he ran a $100 bill through it before he dropped it off (so that it had a ton of credits). News to me.

I'm guessing pressing the button on the back cleared the credits. Or I ran out while testing. In any event: all's well that ends well.

I used @security0001's cap kit (which was great, as always). I also installed a new filter cap. FYI this Vision Pro/Tovis MTG-1901CN model didn't have a capacitor at C361, and the capacitor at C413 was unpopulated.
