New Donkey Kong world record and the "Kong Off"....

Maybe I was under a ROCK, or it just wasn't widely reported here, but Hank Chien has re-claimed the DK world record with a score of over 1,090,000 points! Here is the report:

So, i am wondering how this will effect the "tone" of the upcoming "Kong Off" event, as it will certainly reduce the probability that a new world record will be established at the event. Was this previously reported on here, and i just missed it? I would absolutely LOVE to be at the Kong Off, but it is too far away and my business needs me here, unfortunately...

I think there needs to be a freakin' gold-plated championship belt that all these guys have to compete for. I'd like to see something like the WWF World Champ belt for DK, the Intercontinental Belt for DK JR. etc etc etc.

Hank actually moved his own world record up a couple weeks ago at Funspot.

GREAT IDEA! At the rate things are going, you would have to ship it between New York, Florida and Washington state about every three to four months! I also think that when events like the upcoming "kong off" happen, they should include a number of extra "side" events that a lot of the spectators could participate in. An old school Street Fighter 2 double elimination tournament with some decent prizes would be a good example...

Fa sho! We have a Street Fighter II championship belt that floats around our local group for SF2 contests. Guess who is the current Championship belt holder? :D

Pics or it didn't happen...

I'm in Salem right now... maybe I could come claim the belt? (not likely, I haven't practiced at all)

Don't worry. That belt would stay on the east coast.

Washington is now firmly out of the picture. :D

How CRAZY is it for me to suggest such a thing, and you actually have something like that going on with the same game from my example???

I think that there are LOTS of people who would enjoy such an activity at an event such as the "kong off". The fact that a lot of people are probably out of practice, yet still have good basic skills, would make it a lot of fun. If I were running the show, i would have two separate events. One for the original SF2 "The World Warrior" and another for Champion Edition: Hyperfighting. That would ensure that everyone involved would get lots of play time between two separate brackets. The original SF2 depends SO MUCH on exact timing, while Hyperfighting moves so quickly. It's quite interesting how much of a contrast the two games are, despite them being basically the same game...

Yeah, in a perfect world I would have 5 machines sitting in my garage in a circle with the preliminary matches and practice matches happening. Then I'd have a showcase cab for the semi-finals and final matchups. I've got the picture on my other computer from when I won my first SF2 tourney at my birthday party in 2010. I use to have a Sf2 tourney once a month back in the day. $5 in on the pot, winner take all. Our largest pot was like $80 or $85 dollars. I'd always make it to 2nd or 3rd place but would crumble from the pressure at the finals. So when I finally took first place, I milked it. I even posted the final match on youtube, I'll have to re-upload it, as it is pretty funny to watch how me and the other finalist (Tripcannon) are testing each other's game strategies at the get-go. Sort of like a bit of cat and mouse to see who would make the first strike, and how it would occur.

Here's the photo of me calling the wife after the win and wearing the belt

Hey Lee, here's that SF2 final bout that grabbed me the belt.

In my opinion, having a belt that you can carry around just adds to the whole aura of the tourney. This is totally what I'd like to see at the DK competitions. I'd love to see Hank show up wearing a belt, then have to hand it over if Billy creams him.

Pure awesomeness! I'd love to get in on that tourney! The only one I ever entered in was this SF II tourney at my high school, which I won. I think I got $25 bucks out of it.
