New Donkey Kong Jr - Few issues

I think you've done all the preliminary stuff you can. See the previous posts in this thread about HV shutdown. Sounds like you've got similar symptoms and likely similar cause(s).

Awesome!

Thank you to everyone who spent time in here tonight helping me! Eagerly awaiting my (2nd!) cap kit!

Okay - so today I got around to doing the cap kit.

There is some good news and some bad news. The good news is - is that the monitor is now incredibly bright. I had to turn the brightness way down. Also, the image now takes the FULL screen, which is nice to see.

Sadly, the same thing still persists (video!)

I think after this, now is time to order a new TR901, HOT, and H-Hold and see if that clears her up!

That is a sync issue I think. Not monitor issue. IIRC there are adjustment pots on the game boards for that...

I think after this, now is time to order a new TR901, HOT, and H-Hold and see if that clears her up! None of that will fix what you have. (Except the Hold pot maybe) TR901 and the HOT are to fix monitors that do not power up, yours is.

But I really think there are adjustments on the game board....

Well - you were right!!!!

I adjusted the V-Size of all things, and my wife said "Hey, its a little clearer....."

After I looked at it, I adjusted the H-Hold pot, and then it cleared right up.

GAME IS WORKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coin mechs don't start, but the service switch starts a 1P game. No sounds yet either, but I consider this a major win!!

Nice! Glad to see it.

Now swap that orange button to the jump hole, and that's another quick easy fix that gets you that much closer to it running the way it should. ;)

Welp!

More help is needed!

For whatever reason, now the monitor likes to shut off. I'll turn on for 10-15 minutes, and then randomly shuts off. When it shuts off, the BJ test point reads 130v, which I believe means its in shut down mode. When I let the monitor cool down for 5-6 minutes, and plug it back in - the picture comes right and looks good.....for another few minutes.

It may just be "me" - but it also seems like it tends to shut off during a game, and not during the demo mode.

Also, when this shuts down, for some reason the marquee light comes on. It doesn't come on when the game is running, only when the monitor shuts off.

I thought this could be an issue with my power cord, which to be frank, is rather awful. But - the game didn't have any issues prior to me doing the cap kit.

My thoughts say to replace the B+ pot, and maybe something else? I am guessing when I did the cap kit, the B+ is faltering since it hasn't been used regularly.

thoughts?!

If your B+ is spiking I would check for cold solder joints. In my experience that is the lead cause for that.
Also Your Marquee light comes on after the monitor goes into shutdown??? Whats that about.....

It has been a LONG time sense I worked on a Nintendo cab, but is the Marquee light Plugged in, on the bottom of the cab? with a 2 wire plug??? I kind of remember one of my DK's was like that.....

I think once the monitor goes into HV Shutdown, it constantly reads 130V - I think...

Ian Kellogg told me..

"130v is the voltage the b+ will sit at when hv is shut down. Now was it the b+ that screwed up or something else that caused the hv shutdown, I'm not sure.

Again, I can not be 100% sure, but IIRC there is a B+ pot that can get flaky and then there is a X-Ray protection Pot that might go bad. (That will cause HV shutdown IIRC)
Isn't this the one you couldn't go over 106 volts..... Was that fixed with the cap kit or is it still like that?

Imo give the chassis a good reflow in the hv section and flyback. check it and readjust it. After that get a new vr and while your at it replace the b+ pot those are the cheapest pots I've ever seen.

Okay - I'll do a reflow and go ahead and order the B+ kit from Ian Kellogg. Will report back soon.

Just thinking out loud - I am guessing its either cold solder, cracked solder, or a bad VR. When I adjust the B+, it stays and holds whatever voltage I set it to.....and then suddenly, without warning, the monitor just decides to shut off.

Also - yes the marquee is plugged in. All kinds of strange!

Very odd either the solder is failing in the heat or the voltage regulator is. If the b+ kit and the reflow doesn't work I'd go flyback but only last resort. Be sure to reflow the brightness pots too.

On the main monitor PCB, or that small remote board with the 5 pots? Ian can't ship my B+ kit until late next week, so I am going to start repairing my Asteroids cabinet as those boards have been sent to Andrew!

Main pcb and good luck with the asteroids man :)

Does this potentially point to an issue with the power supply?

Do you have a spare power supply to test with?

I am happy to report that after switching out the B+, the machine is now working again! I did notice, when I took the board out of the monitor again, that there was a black wire with a "U-Connector" (Ground, I believe) that I somehow did not reattach the last time I was I was in there. This certainly could have caused me a problem!

Regardless, for now the machine appears to be working. Next on the list is to figure out the sound!
