New Donkey Kong Champion!!!!

Congratulations to Steve...

Did he end his game right after taking the record back like Billy?

I hope not. I have not been following the high score deal, but I am pretty sure I read Billy walked away from a game once he beat the high score.

If thats whats been going on, thats just sad.. But up the best score and let it stand. Stop being attention whores..

if billy had done that we wouldnt be talking about this right now. the reason he did it is to let other people have the spotlight for awhile.

Good news!!! Good for Steve!

Maybe the Billy "Mullet" Mitchell will cry about and throw a tantrum about it again...

huh, i dont remember that happening. must be a dream you had or something.

anyways, no doubt billy will be taking the record back at his convenience, so hopefully wiebe enjoys it while he has the chance...

I wonder if he got that score at the same point in the game as Mitchell or he took it all the way to the kill screen.

I wonder if there is a perfect score for this game. I'd guess not due to some of the random elements.

I need to practice.

Umm, no... Not exactly to my words, but still none the less sounds like a poor sport to me.

In order to prove his gaming skills, Wiebe travels to Funspot Arcade in Laconia, New Hampshire, to perform a high score live for Twin Galaxies founder Walter Day and other high-ranking members of Twin Galaxies, hoping to confront Mitchell and play head-to-head. Although Mitchell does not show, he sends Kuh to observe Wiebe's play. Just prior to the kill screen, Kuh is seen gathering a large crowd to witness. Wiebe reaches it and also achieves a new world record of 985,600 points. However, Mitchell immediately sends a low-quality VHS to Funspot, depicting himself achieving a higher score of 1,047,200 points - a stark contrast to his opinion throughout the film, in which he repeatedly asserts that live scores are the only ones credible. Despite Wiebe's protests that his own first score was disqualified for being submitted via unsupervised videotape, Twin Galaxies accepts Mitchell's score over Wiebe's and proclaims that Mitchell is still the record holder.

Nine months later, Wiebe learns that Guinness World Records wants to publish several of Twin Galaxies' records — including Mitchell's latest score. Wiebe and his family travel to Hollywood, Florida, near Mitchell's home, to challenge him in a public competition, but Mitchell refuses to accept the challenge, and Wiebe fails to surpass a million points. Nevertheless, Day, on behalf of Twin Galaxies, finally acknowledges Wiebe's integrity and credibility.

(maybe it would have helped if someone had told billy that there was a donkey kong movie being made, he was told it was a general video game history documentary, a fact the movie producers have confirmed) Although Mitchell does not show, he sends Kuh to observe Wiebe's play.
(yeah, and everyone knew he wasnt going to show. he told promoters months beforehand that he wouldnt be traveling cross country to the event, which is not a surprise, as he knew nothing of a donkey kong movie being made, and even then, he didnt have the score, tim szcerby did)

(for a couple minutes, then they wait until the record is verified before putting it back up on the scoreboard)

(indeed. billy didnt even own a DK at the time and was not in practice. he had no obligation to show up, whatsoever. he already played wiebe head to head on a mame machine in 2004, and they appeared on stage together and did radio interviews together) Nevertheless, Day, on behalf of Twin Galaxies, finally acknowledges Wiebe's integrity and credibility.
(yes, and then billy publicly trounced wiebes score in front of an audience of hundreds)

Yeah, billy was congratulating wiebe, just before they watched mitchell's next tape...

That's funny, your ears look nowhere near that big in person Bri...

Regardless of how you look at it...that is just flat-out arrogant.

The only reason anyone would do something like that is to hopefully get more attention for themselves somewhere down the line. Don't try to put a "generosity" spin on it. No one is going to buy that garbage.

But no doubt this score will not last, but it's far from the end of things. Anyone, quite frankly, has the capacity to do it. Be it Wiebe, Mitchell, Chien, or anyone else. Everyone has the knowledge to play the game, really.

All in all, the competition on this game does nothing but good for CAG! :)

I have had a DK for over a year. After playing for weeks I couldn't get above 45K. Although it makes me a below average gamer, it's still a hard game. I must say its pretty awesome to see scores like that.

How many times can we have the same discussions on this board. Phet needs to make up a new sign or restore a cab so we can all pay attention to something positive.

Remember class:

1. King of Kong was NOT an accurate documentary. There were several manipulations of quotes and scenes that are well known. The people involved were not told the whole story when filming. I met several of the cast members including Steve and have heard many of the details firsthand. I also witnessed several more interviews done this year with the same people, done by the same producers. Now that everyone knows the story they are dramatically different. Will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
2. Had Steve, Billy, Hank, Tim, or anyone else set a score so high that it would be next to impossible to beat, then this whole thing would go away. How many years would you want to see a new 2nd place score set before you tune out? Remember this is GOOD for classic arcade gaming and makes our hobby more exciting. These are incredible scores and if Billy's score was so high that Steve knew it would be pointless to try to beat it, then what are we going to do, have the "Papa of Popeye" as our next topic of conversation? DK is a fantastic game and this competition is great to watch.

so i was just thinking about this this morning. does anyone else think there's gonna be a ceiling they're getting to as far as the max high score. i mean, everyone that's gotten the record (mitchell, wiebe, and chien) is basically out point pressing the other to get the score. i think there's gonna be a point pretty soon where one of them's gonna hit a wall.

There's a wall there, but it fluctuates depending on random elements. You could play the exact same game and get many different scores because its totally random as to whether you get 300, 500, or 800 points when you smash a barrel or a fireball. Even if these guys get to a point where they play a flawless game and squeeze every point possible, they still have to deal with the fact that some games will get higher scores simply because you got lucky and got more 800 point barrels/fireballs than 300 point barrels/fireballs.

Indeed good for Steve Wibie, but i hope Billy will get it again with a 1000 points or so, so that our hobby will live in the spotlight a little longer...

Congrats!

There was an interview with Weibe on TG which was interesting.

I think pretty much at this point that it's luck to get the record, at least for players like Weibe and Mitchell. Their skills are at such a high level that they really don't have any room for improvement and the difference between the record and an average game (for them) is mostly luck.

Why do you think Billy kills his game right after he breaks the record? He is no dummy, that much is certain.
