Well after about 4 months, I beat my high score. (I've had the machine, and been playing the game around 8 months now.)

398,300.

Back in the mood to try to break 500,000.

Very impressive score! this week, I just finished my DK restoration and I'm still a rook at the game but I have gotten to 180,000.

On Jan 15th of this year, I went with the wife up to Chicago to visit our son (who works for one of the major and few-remaining arcade game companies) and to watch Steve Wiebe play. We had the best possible view--right behind him to the right so we could see the actual screen. Steve signed my son's "King of Kong" movie--what a modest, nice guy.

Steve didn't get the world's record back that he'd just lost to plastic surgeon Dr. Hank Chien a week before. However, he got 872,600 on his first try. What blew my mind is the way he's able to handle the random crazy barrels with ease that tend to be my nemesis. He just moves or jumps and is rarely caught by any. I'm aware of the "safe" spot on the top level but man... he's wicked at every level.

Here's a video somebody took while there... ironically after what I said above, a crazy barrel finally did catch Steve right at the end of that vid.

After practicing on the elevator stage, I know almost down to the pixel where to stand, and when to go up the ladder. I almost never die on that stage. Its almost always wild barrels, or an unlucky barrel space barell space Harrell.

My best on my DK was just over 100K and I only beat the 3rd elevator stage once. It really kicked my ass for a long time and was the reason I sold the game. Fortunately, I was able to it once just before it left.

I know what you mean... once you know how to execute it, the elevator stage goes from being the toughest to the easiest to clear. I have more trouble with fireballs on the pie conveyor and those random barrels on the barrel levels. At that Wiebe event, he showed a place you can stay on the top level an never get killed by a barrel... that's been useful but you have to get there first!

Dood, you've got me by about 5000 points! I've gotten to the 390,000s a couple times now and I always choke right before hitting 400,000K. Nice score Fader!

Thanks, my high before this was 310,300. Before that it was around 250,000. So I usually go up around 80,000 points each time i get a new high score. My goal is 500,000 this year. I figured it out, and if I were to play at the pace I do, until the Kill Screen, Id hit right around 850,000. It just makes you all the more impressed at a 1,000,000 point score. It's completely insane.

I worked a little on my DK skills... creeping up little by little with 216,900 (1st attached photo).

While looking around TwinGalaxies.com, I noticed that the listed "World's Record" for Sinistar is 761,305 by Chris Emery back in 1984 http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx?c=22&pi=2&gi=3934&vi=5211

Funny thing--I have three saved high scores that are better, the highest being 1,080,325 (same game settings). I think it's time I get out the camcorder and make a DVD for TG.

Nice one.

DK is frustrating the hell out of me lately. I'm averaging in the mid 200,000s. Directly after congratulating Fader on his score I went and played a game. I reached 235,000 on my first man. So I'm thinking I have good potential to break 400k. Then I swiftly lost the rest of my men and ended at 275,000. Sigh.

I bumped my high up to 68,xxx the other day and am now averaging 60,000. Not great, but double what I was averaging a week ago.

A big epiphany for me was that barrel control can be used for self preservation, not just point pressing. I hope to beat the first barrel stage on Level 4 tonight, something I haven't done yet. I think I can get 100k by next week. That's my hope, at least.

Something that helps is grouping barrels, and pulling barels down the ladders correctly.

Such as, on the top level, if a barrel gets by the first ladder, and another one is coming, if you pull the far one down by juking right, then do a quick left, you can pull the far one down, pull the close one down and hit it, and then hit the far one. Maximizing how many barrels you hit with your top hammer.

Those scores look good to me! I noticed as well that I tend to lose lives in bunches--in my 216,000 game I lost the last two just trying to clear the elevators. I guess it was fatigue; it was 10:30 and past my bedtime. lol

I had the very same elightening moment last night--being patient on the barrels instead of getting to the top as fast as possible. This does two important things:

1. Early in the level, barrels can't always be controlled no matter how hard you try to fake them with moves. Later on, they can be driven to where you want them consistently. Although you now must deal with a greater number of barrels, they can be controlled predictably and you don't die as much. This really helps when getting to the top by going up the right upper ladder--they always bite on fakes.

2. The act of controlling barrels causes you to get the big picture. Now you don't get caught as often by crazy barrels and, when you do want to get to the top fast, it's suddenly easier. You have a sense of where things are and what's going on.

This should be required viewing for anybody who wants to get better at Donkey Kong. Nobody does it better than Dr. Hank Chien, current DK record holder:
