New Custom Multi MK1 control panel overlay available made from original scan.

I had previously posted a thread asking for this and I couldn't find anything that suited my purposes. This is for anyone putting multiple MKs in an MK1 cabinet and not knowing what the heck to do with the run button.
There were a couple of different MK control panels out there with some odd button layouts but all half-tone was lost and mismatched fonts were used.

I have spent a great deal of time on this custom control panel overlay (Thanks to retrogamez for the original high res art scan). Moving the MORTAL KOMBAT down to make enough room for the run buttons while preserving the half-tone and gradient patterns was a challenge. Nevertheless, here it is and I would like to know who would be interested in possibly doing a group run with Rich.

Here is a scaled down version of the CPO with a button mockup.

**** Updated with correct black button borders 2/13/2013 ****

**** Updated with video of final test print 3/20/2013 ****

**** Removed black bleed border around entire cpo, replaced with replica imagery & halftone ****

**** Updated with images of first test print from www.ThisOldGame.com 2/26/2013 ****
OK well here it is
what I think is the final for this custom MK cpo shipping this out to Avalon tommrrow for feedback. matching texture and color match match to NOS (as close as inkjet can get)

Here is an example of the preserved half-tone in this CPO compared to the other ones currently available.

So,

It looks like so far we have you, myself, and retrogamez. I'll leave this up for a fews days to see the interest. I know today is Monday and a lot are just going back to work and won't start slacking on the interwebs until at least tomorrow :p

I would like to see if Rich can send me a test print to make sure all is good. I have PM'd him and am waiting his reponse.

Ok so our printer at work is screwed up. So I ran accross the street to the sign place and asked them to print up a test on posterboard for $13. Just to make sure everything fits perfectly. The lady up front told me they have a 24 hr turn around time. I tried to sweet talk her into bumping it up infront of everyone else so we see what happens. Also looking at it blown up there are some places that could use some touching up in the bottom right hand corner. Its not enough to bother me really but I'm sure someone would complain. On the bottom right foot there is a white'ish blue spot that could easily be touched up and at the bottom right corner there are smudges and some missing half tone. Also some of the black and area around right dragon tail has white specs from being scanned. These would be an easy touch up. This is all from the original scan so I thought I mention it if you want to try and clean it up. I know you've been busting your @zz on this and don't want you to feel like I'm nit picking your work. I'm also going to see if Rich can print me an orignal style with the words on it as obvioulsy mine has the stick characters. Funny how thats the first thing everyone notices.

Thanks,

I had actually started doing touch up last night. I had found some other splotches and weirdness(scan artifacts) around the directional arrows that I took care of.

I will make sure these areas you pointed out are touched up as well.

There are some things however like little small dark spots in the half-tone that were that way originally. You can see one in my dragon face example. I'm kind of all about leaving that knowing that it was like that way originally. I'm kind of weird about preserving imperfections created by the factory.

Scan artifacts however have about as much of a place on there as spiders in my pillow case.

I noticed on the MK3 scan that there are some scan streaks too. That would drive me crazy. :)

Love the attention to detail you two have. keep up the good work.

Yeah so not only was the half-tone missing, it was misaligned like the printer slipped, which made it hard to blend but I think I got it looking good. There were some nasty smudges and spots around the dragon and on the B and T in KOMBAT that are now gone. I also centered MIDWAY correctly.

I looked around elsewhere... it all looks clean. I added some shading on the run button border to better match the default white borders. It's pretty cherry at this point. I wish Rich would see my PM I'm anxious. :)

ok, so I got our printer working since the sign shop let me down on speedy printing. Damn Epson 9000 doesn't have win7 x64 drivers. Printed a test and i'll cut out the holes and see how it lines up. I'll post the results. Again this is only on cheap photo paper so I'm sure the acutal printing will look better an not so glossy.

retro, check your e-mizzle I just sent you a newer version.

Ok holes are cut and heres what it looks like mounted. Please ignore all the red buttons as it was all I had laying around without striping my other board. I have rich's control panel silk screen sides and front to replace the worn ones that are on my machine currently. This overlay is perfect. There is about a 1/16 of over lay on the top and bottoms that will need to be trimmed off, but that is perfect as most boards are not going to be perfectly square and this will compensate. Holes line up perfectly. Time to get a print order started and get some new lexan to show off how great this looks. With this you can take off your factory board and store it. Build a new one that looks as good as the factory one and put all your MK's into one cabinet. For us who don't own all five.............YET!!! Aval0n, funny how a week ago you said you wouldn't even know where to start and a few pieces of art later and bam you have a work of art.

Hey that looks really great! Thanks for taking the time to print that. I'm glad it worked out well.

I can't wait to get one printed for myself now.

Rich got back with me and I'm going to send it over to him. He says he has a NOS so he can check colors.

awesome project. too bad I have an MK2 cab. :( I'm also not even 100% sure if I'm keeping it or not, might be selling it off.

clean up

Today talking with Rich he had pointed out to me that the shaded grey in the white areas were actually created by the scan and not part of the original image. Honestly, I should have noticed/figured this out myself.

I don't see them screen printing many grey gradients. :p

I have cleaned that up and provided a new copy to Rich.

Nothing wrong with an MK2 cab at all! :)

That is an awesome shot of Raiden.

still have yet to strip the paint off it. and my CP isn't original, it's actually a pretty messy MK4 one where the wood was split. I'd have to have the box redone, and drill a new start button hole or two (not 100% sure of their placement). I also can't move all 10 games into an apartment lol I'll have to sell some off.

Ill be running a test print of this shortly
and will compare it to the NOS one I have here
Ill also be able to match the original cpo texture.

Now Im no MK expert
so are new panels needed for this version?
curious as to why the white holes on the black are even there.
generally those would be filled in and punched separately.
these WILL NOT be prepunched.

meaning if something dosnt align you could have some white showing.
thoughts....

looks like a lil gray still over the "A" in "After"

and is it just me or should the white under the dragons mouth be straight and not have some red w/ black halftone in it? also there's a lil white above his nose in the red as well. I know these are minor things but no sense in putting in all this work to have a 90% done piece.

Ill take a closer look at the NOS piece
sometimes these are printing errors, and not even errors really.
it depends but when colors are separated and screened you'll naturally get some
misalignment, color bumps, etc. its sometimes just a part of that process.
sometimes art is cleaned too much and it starts to lose some of that charm
that comes from original pieces that are screened.-IMO
