I'm looking at buying a 4' x 8' CNC machine. I'm wondering what everyone thinks a fair price would be for cabinets including shipping. Do you think $300 shipped for an unassemble PacMan cabinet is fair? Maybe $200 for unassembled cocktails?

Jeff

I'm just guessing, but I'm guessing that once you get into it you're going to realize that you've got to charge more than that.

Yeah, I know that the fact that it'll be unassembled, a flatter package, would cut down on shipping some, but I've inquired as to shipping costs for intact cabs and, from what I've found, $300 is about the ballpark for the 500 - 1000 mile range.

Still, I've recently paid around $100 or $150 to have 200-ish lb. packages shipped from, like, Sam's Club. So maybe you could pull it off.

If so I need a Universal (Mr. Do!) and a Ms. Pac Man cab shipped to Apple Springs, TX STAT!

OK. I sent DPTwiz a PM. Evidently he is the unofficial nationwide CNC coordinator. Hopefully he'll have a good idea of costs and if there is already anyone in my area.

Jeff

Yeah, I was in dialogue with OU Flight last week or so, re an empty Crystal Castles cab he had for sale. He currently doesn't have a Universal cab for pattern, and his Ms. Pac Man is a little higher-dollar than what you're proposing. lol. I may end up getting one from him, who knows? I'm 2.25 hours from him if I recall.

It may not be worth it to me. I didn't realize there was someone so close to me. I just do it as a hobby, so I'm not trying to make a living at it or anything. If I can get a few $ to support the habit, I'm happy.

Jeff

It looks like he's off to a good start, with around about 20 - 25 machines in his inventory. I congratulated him for finding a good way to, as you say, feed the habit. You should feel him out re his intentions and ambitions. It could be that he would not consider y'all competitors at all. I noted, for instance, that he has yet a Frogger machine on file. No one can readily have all of them.

It's a good stab at something that could prove profitable and definitely contributory. I'm guessing that most of the collectors on KLOV could benefit-- or at one time could have benifitted-- from a perfect, sturdy surrogate cab to house one or more of their machines in. I, for one, don't want to take Mr. Do! out of a Frogger cab (in order to reconvert it back to Frogger) without a cab to put Mr. Do! in. I would gladly pay for a CNC Universal/Mr. Do! cab at this point, dress it up with some nice vinyl sideart...

I don't know. How much does it cost to get into the whole CNC thing? An 8' x 4' apperatus can't be worthless.

I run a 22' x 6' cnc router daily, would LOVE to have one at home but the boss pretty much lets me use it for whatever I want so thats cool. If you ever want to farm something out to MN just let me know, I just need the CAD drawings and beer money :) I'm not looking to start doing an entire operation or anything but you find a guy or two in MN that need something I'll cut em for you :)

Wow that's huge. What in the world do you cut that you need a router that size for?

Jeff

Here is a pic of parts I am running right now :) All the long slices of alum composite on the side are stuff I save for projects (Invader wall sets/etc..) My boss usually just chucks those big 20' pieces right in the scrap bin at only 4 cents a pound!!

that is one hell of a spoil board lol! i just wish i could get mine to quit warping. It's ok if i throw a sheet of melamine on there, the vac will catch. If it's ply, i shut off the back 2 quadrants of my table, climb on top of it to get the front two to catch, then i have to stretch my foot to the back corner, and reach under the table and turn the valve on to the back one, then the other one lol

There's the idea to go with-

A network of guys spread across the country building cabinets for the region near them. If you could work out something to share 'intellectual property' and band together, you could have a go at it.

Like if shipping turns out to be 1/3 of the total cost, and you can minimize that by distributing semi-locally, that makes things more affordable and more attractive for buyers.

A partnership.
