Hi all,

Just wanted to drop in and introduce myself.

Like everyone else here I spent way too many hours and coins in arcades as a young boy, wandering wide eye'd from cab to cab amazed by the technological wonder of sprites, COLOR graphics and ZOMG speech!!! in games.

My all-time favorites are Paperboy, Ikari Warriors, Moon Cresta... I guess I could go on and on.

Now 40 years old I have decided it's time to check off some of those old childhood dreams I never got around to, like collecting the full set of Series 1. Star Wars Bubble gum cards (with stickers) and of course owning my own arcade machines!!!!

I started out by building a full size Mame cab over at BYOAC which is nearly finished (Link in my sig). That exposed me to some great building techniques and general skills that would serve me well when I moved on into classics.

Recently I got lucky and snagged Paperboy #UR00034 on CL for a mere $250, so that's the start of my drream classics collection.

I'm really enjoying the hobby so far and fortunately have a very supportive wife who let's me pursue the hobby without much grief.

Looking forward to getting to know you all and building my own little arcade over time.

Joel

Cali is a great place to live when in this hobby. There are a lot of guys down there. Welcome sir and good luck.

I'll keep my eyes open for an Ikari Warriors and Moon Cresta for ya. Welcome to KLOV!

Thanks. Ikari Warriors would be great, Moon Cresta is awesome and one day maybe. I'm at a 4-cab limit in the house we have right now lol, and I have 3 so there's room for 1 more.

Currently looking to buy a new place and a HUGE game/family room is on the list of criteria lol.

I have an Ikari Warriors (IK) II jamma pcb and marquee, if you are interested. They never made a dedicated cab for IKII, so my plan was to put it on a jamma switcher with the first IK, but I would sell it if you want it.

I appreciate the offer but I'd rather find an original and furb it, for me that is what the hobby is about even more than actually playing the games. I have a MAME cab for general playing of ROMS

No worries at all. Just know that mostly they were kit games, not dedicated cabinets and it can be difficult to tell the difference. Take care sir.

Edit: I clarified this later on.

I did not, no. Many of the dedicated boards (SNK pinout) were placed in universal-style dynamo cabinets with small square side art. They look like this……..

The rest were bought as kits (jamma pinout) by operators, and they converted another game to it. The kit was almost identical art-wise as the "dedicated" dynamo machines.

Edit: I needed to clarify something about the pinouts.

You bet, good luck to you. Watch the "for sale" threads on here because guys sell the full kits sometimes.

Also, SNK (who made these games) first used their own pinout for the pcb. These were technically dedicated games, but they used the same side art as the kits and were put in dynamo cabinets. When they were producing the kits, the pinout was switched to jamma. Keep that in mind because there is a difference, but not in the "full side art dedicated cabinet fashion". I hope this was not confusing.

OK interesting to know. Typically I will be remaking artwork for cab sides as that's something I enjoy. I try to stay true to the original but also try and create something more visually appealing.

Kinda like the guy that chromes the diff housing on his '67 Mustang, i want to bring extra flare to the original without taking away from it's design or character.

Nice. Not a bad idea. I like to sometimes change the t-molding color to something other than the stock color, but I can easily change it back when I want to sell it. I think there is a general consensus that these are your games, do what you want with them. Just know that many of the diehard original guys will not accept alterations in the original designs if it is a dedicated cabinet. Or if they do, they will dock the price hard because they will want to make it original again. Because this is a preservation website, you just have to know that.

Yeah I understand, and to be honest I don't see myself buying anything to sell later, I'm trying to just build a mint collection of what I consider great games, breathing on them slightly during resto to give them my own touch.

here's an example piece of my Paperboy rework I am creating at the moment, I've included a pic of the Atari team from 1984 and completely redrawn the art in vectors manually. A little colorwork in Photoshop, the goal being to enhance, not change.
