New all time low for Radio Shack

When I first started going into Radio Shack back in 1969, the employees had to be licensed HAM radio operators. Go back and look at their old catalogs from before 1975 at this site:

http://www.radioshackcatalogs.com/

Radio Shack's downfall is that they "had to have" a store on every block in every city (over expansion) and in every shopping mall. Naturally they didn't care what kind of high rents that they had to pay. Too many stores and too high of rent = bad combination.

If they would cut down the number of stores, find locations with cheaper rent, and get back to basics, then they'll survive.

Ken, those catalogs are great! What fun to look at... brings back fun memories!

Kind of a longshot, but does anybody know of a component store anywhere near Charlotte, NC? There's a place called Slayton Computers and Electronics, but I'm trying to find one with more, or closer to me. LOL. I can't imagine what Frys would be like.

Look in your local telephone directory "Yellow pages" under the heading of "Electronic Equipment & Supplies".

I remember several years ago that RS put in a 'mini store' inside my local Block Buster video. It didn't last too long. Did anyone else see this done in their area?

I remember looking forward to the new catalog every year so I could dream about the stereo equipment I wanted but never could afford.

I was almost thinking for them something like this could work, if done right, like maybe putting a parts/component mini store in a store like Hobby Lobby or something similar.
Of course their idea for a mini store would probably just be a cell phone sales desk, with some batteries...

Agreed. Then they can get that niche market back, providing they can be pulled back from the internet.

Nevertheless, it's a good dream but the corporate mentality of today would not allow it.

Don't forget Optimus....

FWIW, I had some Optimus 6x9's in my old Mustang... for the price, I was VERY impressed with their 6x9's.... everything else sucked horribly though. I actually still have them, and they'll be going in my new (to me, same year '79) Mustang when I get around to it. The subwoofers were taken apart for the magnets to be used as parts holders (screws, bolts, misc metal pieces).

Does anyone remember Radio Shacks battery of the Month Club?
Those were good days indeed.
I was looking for some small tools here in our Louisiana Shack and Pimple Stilskin didnt know where the tool section was.

When I was a kid.. I had sooo many of those cards. I never bought a battery :) I would go in and get my free batts and play Dungeon of Daggorth (sometimes Color Baseball).

Pimple Stilskin? LMAO!!! Classic. Yeah, I remember the BotMC. Back then I couldn't WAIT to go back to Radio Shack. I would read the monthly catalog, every page, just like a magazine. Couldn't wait to go get another game or book, or peripheral for my Coco, and I was always curious about all the parts and tools they had hanging on 3 walls. Yes, 3 walls. Good old days indeed. I had the 160-in-1 kit, and a couple of others. I would hack on stuff, get motors and batteries, switches and speakers, and little mini-transformers, and CATV crap, and take it home and do my best to hack something together. If I'd had someone around to mentor me I could have been dangerous. :D

Now it makes my face twitch just thinking about going there.....:(

I just have to rant here..

I have been in Radio shack a couple times recently, I wanted an audio cable for the headphone jack of an mp3 player, they tried to sell me a set of AV cords, even after pointing to the headphone jack on my MP3 player. I went home and ordered from monoprice.com, it was less of a hassle than explaining it to the clerk.

The other time I wanted the f-connector to hook up an atari 2600 or similar video game system, its useless to ship a $3 connector so off to Radio shack, this time I was armed with the part number from the website and I got what I went in there for.

If you want something from a radio shack store make sure you have the part number from the website when you go in, then you will be able to find it. The website also has a utility where you can search the inventory of local stores so it will tell you if something is in stock, saving you a trip to the store if they don't have it.

You can also ship to store...

And if they don't have something, you can get free shipping to home (if you go into a store.).

I needed some d-sub 25's for a supergun project and they were out, so they shipped them to me for free.
