New all time low for Radio Shack

speaking of roman numerals...here's something interesting
everyone knows about the whole 666, mark of the beast thing, right?

I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500
I knew it! I knew LCD's were the devil's work! Now it's proven!!!!!

If you made 8.00 dollars a hour would you really care where the screws were at? Its a fastfoood job for electronics............ would you like cheese with that?

What's your callsign? I Ham it up from time to time too!

Back when I was into scanners, shortwave dx,ing and ham radio (5 years ago), I would go in Cell Phone Shack for small parts.

It never failed: "Can I help you find something?" "No! Even if I told you, you wouldn't have a clue" I already know where they are."

At the cash register: "Can I interest you in a cell phone" Holding up my Nextel "Can you beat FREE." "Well ok then how about a satellite sys......Me, pointing at the giant f-ing bucket truck I drove up in, "Again, can you beat FREE!"

Every single time I went in there it was the same speech. If they trained they're people to know and understand what they carry and not selling me shit, they might have been ok.

I went in recently and those "parts" I use to buy no longer exist in The Shack.

I use to love going in there when I was a kid (late 70's early 80's)

add up both columns and they equal 666...roman numerals are alot older than ours...they've been around since before Biblical times, so the mark of the beast might not actually have 6's in it, it might have I V X L C D

just something to ponder

Actually, wouldn't it be DCLXVI?

Speaking of the analog clock and different forms of counting, I think klov would be proud to know that my 7th grade math classroom has a Binary Clock on the wall. I have to spend a class period at the beginning of the year just explaining how to read it.
Tape measures aren't as bad- they just suck at fractions. I'm not 100% sure at what age it's taught anymore, but I believe it's sixth grade.

To be fair to radio shack, since you can now buy any component you want over the internet painlessly and have it show up within a day or two, there's no way in hell they can keep stocking and selling every little component we want, and stay profitable. They sign a cell phone plan they make a couple hundred bucks, they sell a 47uf50v cap, they make 12cents. They'd have to stock a ton of different components to make themselves a viable source for the shit, so I don't blame them for switching away from it.

With all that said, they're pretty much useless since everything that they DO still do, Wal Mart or Best Buy does much better.

the thing that really pisses me off about radio shack is all the shit they try to sell you. my phone and tv isn't free, but i tell them it is everytime i get asked. then they try to sell me batteries. never ends.

Speaking from a guy that used to work for the Shack back in the 80's, the reason they push the batteries is simple; markup. Those packs that they sell for $5.00 cost them 80 cents. Yes, you heard me right - how that's for profit? Even the freaking dollar stores that sell you a 4 pack of batteries are making a profit, can you believe it?

When I was working there at least they still stocked parts for what their supposed customer base was. Now, all I can do is shake my head when I go in there because all they want to sell you now is a freaking cell phone. Again, for the same reason; profit - they get a hefty kickback from the cellphone provider for that contract that locks you in as a customer...

Those parts however are literally pennies. The decision to drop the line was purely to make space for other items they felt would sell better. Space in a Shack store is at a premium, hence the decision. It was not based on cost of keeping inventory.

Very interesting insight.....Thanks Havok....

I have NEVER been in to a Rat Shack where there was more than 2 other customers... EVER... in the 25 years I've been going.

Went to Rat Shack a couple years back for an HDMI cable... HAHAHAHA...

Their cheapest cable in store was $35.00... I walked across the street to Walmart where I picked one up for about $11.99... same length... same quality...

I know... I can barely contain myself when I see someone in Best Buy / Rat Shack spending over $100 on a "Monster" HDMI cable. I feel like telling them "Put the cable down, put your wallet away, drive home and go to monoprice.com!"

Are they still open? I remember visiting their store a couple of years back but they aren't in that location anymore.

Yes they are still open. We purchase a lot of stuff from them at the job. VB location does not sell component level products though, just the Norfolk location.

1530 Ingleside Road, Norfolk, VA - (757) 855-0105

RadioShack was great back in the late 70's - early 80's... its really sad to see where its gone.. I used to love to look at all the parts... the computer stuff it was great! I even learned to program on the TRS-80 color computer with 16K of RAM WHOA!

bring back the battery of the month club

IIRC back in the day the used to hire people with some sort of mechanical/electrical aptitude, and you could always count on the manager or assistant manager being able to help you. Now because of the shit pay all they can get is some 20 year kid to be the assistant manager for minimum wage. It baffles me how they are still in business. Does anyone buy anything of value there? I wouldn't buy a cell phone there and I certainly haven't spent more that $20 in any given year there but for some reason they occupy a spot at every strip mall and shopping center. It must be a money laundering front.

They still have brand marketability for old timers. I've seen plenty of old folk who come to Rat shack for TV's phones, etc because they might remember the Radio Shack of old. Really their name is the only thing keeping them afloat. Once they go to 'the Shack' it will be all over.

When I first started going into Radio Shack back in 1969, the employees had to be licensed HAM radio operators. Go back and look at their old catalogs from before 1975 at this site:

http://www.radioshackcatalogs.com/

Radio Shack's downfall is that they "had to have" a store on every block in every city (over expansion) and in every shopping mall. Naturally they didn't care what kind of high rents that they had to pay. Too many stores and too high of rent = bad combination.

If they would cut down the number of stores, find locations with cheaper rent, and get back to basics, then they'll survive.

Kind of a longshot, but does anybody know of a component store anywhere near Charlotte, NC? There's a place called Slayton Computers and Electronics, but I'm trying to find one with more, or closer to me. LOL. I can't imagine what Frys would be like.
