New all time low for Radio Shack

"If Sony and JVC start including gold-tipped cable cords with their products, we're screwed."

LOL gotta love the Onion.

Were they also near Philly? Haven't tried any of my old rotary phones in years...

Also incase you missed it, Northeast area is doing a Meet-up on the 20th at a place called Crab Towne USA the address 1510 Crain Hwy S, Glen Burnie, MD 21061
A bunch of close local people will be there.. Me(as long as I didn't miss a prior commitment) thebman80, orion3311, cueball(would try and make it) as well as many other people in MD, VA, etc. As well as another gathering at RichieKnuckels in March (also the 20th?)

Yea, the folks in question are actually closer in than I am.

Crab Towne: Thank for the heads up. Probably can't make it, but it's nice to know. What's really funny is that for a while I was in that area all the time (my dad was in the hospital there), and I never knew they had games, or I'd have gone in.

I never worked for Radio Shack so I hold no grudge but at the same time I really don't want to see it go under. For me, it's just another piece of nostalgia from my youth gone forever. Radio Shack was always known as the "electronics store" and its the farthest thing from! The renaming of it to "The Shack" is just a last ditch effort to delay the inevitable.

Well at least you got the kid to talk to you. When I go to any local store in my town I have to wait until the kids working there are available between text messages.

you should see kids try to read a tape measure...

What is this 'tape' you speak of? I am rather intrigued in the possibilities...

I'm fortunate enough to have a good electronics place nearby where I work called Fulton Radio. I was able to go there at get a B+ filter cap and some molex connectors to fix up a monitor. No way Rat Shack would have that stuff.

Radio Shack has saved my butt several times - they may not carry many parts, but I can generally get by with what they *do* sell in a pinch. The Radio Shack near my house is one of the few "full parts" stores in the area - the others don't stock the full range of parts. Granted, the full range of parts is still pretty pathetic, but it's better than some stores, where you'd be hard pressed to find a resistor assortment.

Although, I was rather suprised that they sell 2.5A rectifier diodes in packages of THREE. Seriously? Three? What were they THINKING?

While I'm not happy that their selection is terrible, I'm thankful that I can get parts at all.

My local Rat Shack still has a parts section. An old timer runs the store. One day I called in and asked if he had a cap, and he asked me radial or axial. I was in such shock that I didn't even know what to answer at first.

When I went in later that day I told him how shocked I was at his response. We then had a great conversation about the 'glory days' of hobbyist electronics. He has to fight pretty hard with corporate to keep his parts section, even if it is a shell of its former self. Any time a store shuts down or eliminates their part section, he talks them into sending him all of their inventory.

So yes, Rat Shack has helped me out more than a few times the last few years.

Radio shack is Dead to me.

Should be renamed "Txt'n Hut"

I went in the other day hoping I would find some IC sockets. After trying to explain to the person behind the counter what an IC was I gave up and left.

And yes they do carry them, although at an outrageous price.

Actually, Radio Shack has some connectors that are supposed to be used for RC cars or something, they're perfect replacements for monitor power connectors. lol Go figure.

I've already done several rants about Radio Shack... but I wasn't sure if it was because they suck... or because I applied for a job there, never heard back from them... and everytime I go in to get flux or a new soldering iron tip... I look around and see the people they hire instead of me... amazing.

Radio Shack's headquarters is here is Fort Worth...
a few years back they built an amazing state of the art campus on the edge of downtown overlooking the river. Probably the nicest facility in the whole city... they had their "flagship store" (for whatever that's worth) right out front and everything.
Today... this same campus is owned by the local junior college who allows Radio Shack to operate out of one of the small buildings on the campus. RS basically had to sell it to stay afloat. The flagship store is closed (I think the college is about to make it their bookstore) and there is no indication that Radio Shack even exists there. A buddy of mine is a programmer for RS and he says that if you walk out of the area where the Radio Shack people are allowed to work from, you are surrounded by a bunch of 19 year olds looking for their algebra 101 class. He says it's a complete joke. He also says that cell phones are the only thing keeping them from shutting down... but it's just a matter of time.

He thinks he knows what a screw is! REALLY??? My god. It's bad enough that Radio Shack doesn't have simple components and hardware anymore. But have we as a nation really raised a generation of kids that don't know what a fucking screw is???

Jeezus!!!

At least we can be sure he will not know how to reproduce. :D

i went into the local one here and asked for a 10 pin header. they told me that they dont sell car parts and proceded to tell me where the auto parts store is. i think they should just close now and reopen under a new name like "we have phones"

speaking of roman numerals...here's something interesting
everyone knows about the whole 666, mark of the beast thing, right?

I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500

add up both columns and they equal 666...roman numerals are alot older than ours...they've been around since before Biblical times, so the mark of the beast might not actually have 6's in it, it might have I V X L C D

just something to ponder

I have a birthmark on my head that looks like that....
