Well I finally got some new 2532 roms laid down on my mspac. 6E,6FFC,6H,6J,6K,6L,5E & 5F.

I also laid down 1 new 1N4004 diode at d3.

I still have all the jumper wires intact from the other op's hack on this board.

http://mrrepairs.net/mspac/

There are two pictures in that folder on my server where I am stuck tonight on this board repair.

So with all new 2532 on the board I am wondering if I should pull all the jumper wires?

I am also guessing I have ram issue and/or I have a dip setting wrong.

My pictures don't look like anything on this page below to me...

Whats next guys???

You have a hacked board, and there are 4 too many ROMs installed in this picture.
http://mrrepairs.net/mspac/DSCN2993.JPG

There are 2 extra ROMs in row 5 (Only 5E & 5F should be populated)
There are 2 extra ROMs in row 6 (Only 6E, 6F, 6H, 6J should be populated)

It would be helpful to know what Hack you have on that board. I am sure that someone like Spaeth would recognize it on sight. It may be the hack to play Ms Pac without the daughter card, but I do NOT know for sure.

Thanks for the reply Dave. I would say this board played pac/mspac just like you see it with all those roms on board. I was thinking about pulling the new 2532 from 5E & 5F and putting the originals back in. They were mb8516's in those slots. There was also a mb8516 in 6L but it lost 1 leg I hope I can repair that one to get a good dump.

Idk I wish I knew which hack it was man. No hack that I can find matches up with this board.

What all would I need to do to this board to return it to stock? The two extra roms on 5 row are not socketed. Would I un solder those then all the jumper wires then just pull 6K & 6L?

Would that put it back to a stock mspac board?

Does the word shotgun apply to a board like this? Is there shotgun kits for pac boards?

I'm sorry... I'm not trying to be cruel, but you clearly have no idea what you are doing....
Why don't you step back, pull out the Pac schems, and try to understand what the hack is first. Read the ROMs that came on the board and figure out what it's running (my guess is that it is a bootleg MsPac set, but I think we already covered that in another thread).

Yep your right I don't know. That's why I am asking questions. How that could be seen as cruel idk at least you gave some advise. That's progress as far as I am concerned. Anyway I am reading the instructions that I have and to this point I have followed what they say I belive.

Here take a look at some of them...

* The Pacman/Ms.Pacman CHEAT works like this:
- Hold down "select Player 1" button to make you invisible to the colored pacman.
You can pass right thru any attaching pacman.
- Hold down "select Player 2" button to speed up (only works in normal ROMs;
if you are using the fast ROM images, this option does not work).

So what would be the next step to get mspac running? Dave says I have 4 to many roms? Ok but I only see two based on the instructions above. The 2 extra were already solder to the board in row 5 before I touched it. I asked if I should un solder them and remove all the jumper wires?

Then Dave went on to say that I have two extras in row 6 meaning 6K & 6L okay but as a refer back to the instructions they are required?

Mabe somebody else can shed a little more light based on the instructions? Clearly it is a little confusing and not newbie proof. I belive I have followed the instructions to this point. I also have a board thats up and running garbage that did not work at all. So thats not to bad so far and I know I still have a few kinks to work out. Oh where did I go wrong???

Flame away!!!

My advice would be to unhack the board back to an original pac and then start troubleshooting it. If you have extra roms in row 5 its probably a 4-1 hack or 2-1 hack of some kind. The mspac without aux board hack doesnt require extra roms at row 5.
I reccomend the 4-1 menu based hack, it works well and is pretty simple to do. Best thing is it only requires 2 roms on the board. Worst part is there are alot of jumpers to install and it takes a bit of time.

Looks like standard garbage screen, could be a thousand different things causing that. Its probably blocky because of the wrong character roms installed. Get the correct roms in there, no sense testing until you swap those. Its not going to run that program without the hacks on the board.

Ok I swapped out all the roms with brand new 2532's with pacman only programed on them.

6E,6F,6H,6J,5E,5F

We removed all the traces and other roms we are now back stock.

We fired the board up and here are the results...

http://mrrepairs.net/mspac/fullpacroms/

We now have a blank screen that you can see some of the burn in showing thru from the monitor. It looks blue in the pictures but I would say a more white or light light gray.

Then we kinda got a little side tracked and replaced all the original roms on my other working pac board with new 2532's and burned all the cheats. These new roms work fine in my good board and we have been having a blast tweeking out all the different ways we can run the working board.

Anyway I just wanted to prove that we are burning the roms correctly and based on all the fun we have been having I would say so.

So back to the non working board. I am ready to buy a stock order of all the stuff that can go wrong with these boards. Sockets, ram, regulators, Z80's, plus all of these for hacking 27010, 27128, 27512, 27256, 2764's ect.

Oh I left out a very important detail when we fired the board back up. One leg on the z80 was not in socket. Top left would be the one. That might have zapped something else on the board and might explain the white screen.

We did get it back in the right way with the same results.

Just to make sure after that test run we pulled the z80 and both sync bus cards and placed them back on the working board and it worked fine.

So if we did zap something else it would be on the none working board only.

Look very closely at the solder side of the board for cut traces, as it is required by a couple of the hacks to make them work.

I went ahead a burned another set of stock pac roms and placed them on the board again with different results.

http://mrrepairs.net/mspac/newpacroms/

This time when I fired here up the screen is all black with a few white blocks...

Great suggestion Dave thank you! We are looking very close at it now.

They could be on either side of the board. I have actually had boards that they cut the trace under one of the sockets! Not sure why they chose to do it there, only makes it harder for someone to undo later and it could have easily been done somewhere visible. Also check 7L for a snipped leg and reconnect. May be 7M, cant remember for sure. It will be obvious when you look at it. You can usually just solder them back together and not have to replace the chip.

Yep... both of us have looked at this board quite a few times. I have not seen anything cut nor she. Unless it's under the 2532's or something else on the board.

You ready to hook me up with a stock order R?

Depends what your looking for. Im getting ready to buy a little over 600 2532's, a few hundred Z80's and a ton of other stuff. I do have most everything for a pac board in stock right now, just depends how much you need. I will be off work wensday through saturday if you want to come by. Bring that board with you and we can check it out.
I have been working on my "problem child" pac boards the last couple days. These are the ones that were giving me problems getting them working so they get thrown back on the shelf. I fixed two of them yesterday and one today...still two more to go. It seems like one out of every ten boards gives me headaches.
