I found some posts from a few years back about how the quality of WG montiors had dropped. I just picked up a Millipede cocktail w/ TONS of burn-in ...so, was kicking around the idea of a new monitor. A few places still sell new 13" monitors...so - should I go for it, or just try to find a used tube w/ less burn in? (If anyone near L.A. has a decent 13" monitor you don't want, lemme know! :) )

I picked a new 13" WG back in 2003 for a mini Neo Geo and it looked amazing ! When did they start going down hill ?

I was googling 13" monitors and I came across some posts from Ken Layton on the BYOAC forums from '07/08...and people were sharing some bad experiences w/ the monitors.

The point of that post was the cheap caps that WG was using. The monitors still look good, but they might have a shortened life (3 years instead of 10). But if you can do your own cap kits, it doesn't take much to change them out later when they start to fail.

The D9500 13" that WG was selling for $99 is a nice monitor. They might have a different model # now (if they still have 13" tubes). Usually cheaper to order direct. Nice bright picture.

Composite sync should only be connected to the negative horizontal sync pin when using these, too...

I have a very late model WG in my Ms. Pac. I LOVE IT. Best monitor hands down in all of my games.

Do caps go bad w/ time or use? If this monitor is for home use (AKA...on a few times a week, if that), is the time frame still going to be about the same?

Ooooh, I hope I can find it at that price! I was seeing them around $200 or more.

Thanks for the tip...as long as I've been in this hobby, I've never done a full monitor swap w/ a different style monitor, and the connection issues are elusive to me. I've done tube swaps and identical monitor swaps...

caps can dry out over time, so even if they were in a bag on a shelf, eventually they will go bad. It'll take longer if not used, but it WILL happen someday. I used some new WG's 5 years ago that are still going fine.

Well, WG no longer lists them on their site, so they might not have any more. you could call and ask, though.

The power connector will probably need to be adapted, too....
