I usually have great luck with off-the-shelf colors for many of my restorations.
Because
a: I am not OCD &
2. Because I like the ease of just grabbing a cheaper, pre-mixed color.
Now I have been slowly restoring my Joust (Factory Robotron Repaint) for about 2 or so years, doing little things here and there to get it closer to finished. I went and picked up an oil-based Rustoleum 'Chestnut' Brown paint, based solely on the fact that it WAS off the shelf (cheaper) and that the color on the label was a very close match to the original Joust Brown. I mixed my first coat with 1/2 primer, so I expected it to be lighter. But then I used full-on Chestnut cut with 10% Penetrol for the second coat. Man it's still waaaaaay too light, almost looks sienna, even though the color bar on the label is 10x darker. Oh well, time to find a pint of a dark chocolate brown oil-based paint for the final coat. This time I'll have to open the lid before purchasing it.
Original Joust:
*sigh*
