Never leave a fallen soldier behind...another DK CPO restore.

Some of you will recognize this CPO from my Donkey Kong Control Panel Restore thread...

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=197628

I didn't use it in my other restore and it has been sitting in my closet ever since it was removed. I felt bad for the little feller so I have decided to improve his quality of life and possibly make hime usable again. Here he is as he is currently...

This is my materials list of what will be used during his "procedure"...

500 grit sandpaper
1500 grit sandpaper
Power Drill
5" disc attachment and 5" buffer pad
2 rags
NOVUS 1, 2, and 3 plastic polish and scratche remover

Later I will update the progression of our fallen and almost forgotten friend.

After 2 hours of work this afternoon, this CPO is coming back to life. I could do more but I ran into two issues...

- I am running very low on NOVUS.

- My battery on my drill died.

I was amazed at the NOVUS though. Not because of what the end results look like (I have been an advocate of the product for years), but the fact that this is the first kit that I bought back in 2005 and it has finally run out. Talk about bang for your buck.

Anyways, here is what was accomplished today...

There were an obvious defect that I couldn't fix. The area that was burned the most by cigarettes was warped and you can still see that in the updated pix. I also need to get a new instruction card. After I get more NOVUS I will put the finishing touches on this and I think it will be usable again. It's not perfect (and never will be) but it isn't an eye sore anymore either.

thats badass...

at work i have a 3m. headlamp restoration kit, has 500,800,1000, 3000 grit papers and then a seperate polisher with compound so i guess i get to cheat a little.

that thing is going to be perfect when you're done. Cant believe this was done with a drill! LOOKING AWESOME! i thought for sure it was junk with all those ciggy burns..

So are you sanding by hand first and then buffing with novus and the drill?

Wow this is awsome how well does this cleaner/scratch remover work on plexiglass beezels?

Yes it does. The key is to only work on the affected areas. Don't sand the entire thing...just where the problems are. Also, it's not a one and done miracle. It takes multiple applications depending on how extensive the sanding was. I have used it plenty of times on bezels and marquees and control panel overlays. Other members use it on buttons...I don't because I have issues with really fine motor skills. Even doing the control panel overlays makes my hand muscles lock up and spasm.

So are you sanding by hand first and then buffing with novus and the drill?

Yes. I am lacking in the stamina and strength department so I cheat with the NOVUS and use the drill. However, after the drill application, I do go back and do the final one by hand.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I enjoy that my work doesn't go unappreciated.

Dude that was an amazing read.
I would have looked at that and thought no way that could be saved.
I would not have know what to do.
I am floored by that.
AMAZING !

Thank you for sharing.

Nice! That looks amazing. I have been thinking about getting some of that Novus and trying it on my DK and DK Junior's CPOs, marquees and bezels.

This thread should be sticky'ed in the repro section. The fact that you were able to bring that COP back from the dead is simply amazing.

Totally done and totally out of NOVUS. I spent a couple more hours on it today and it is as good as it is gonna get. All deep scratches are now fine scratches and the window for the instruction card has been cleaned up. No more dull patches under the jump or start buttons. The only major flaw is the slight warping above the start buttons from the cigs. Couldn't repair that without damaging the art underneath. Check it out...

Now I will probably sell this one off.

Now I know where you got those cigarette burned buttons!

Amazing job, I only wish I could have done as good of a job on the buttons!

Don't sell yourself short. That was damn fine job you did. I ended up puting the best matching pair on my DK, the two best repaired ciggy buttons on my DK3 panel and I have the best button and another ciggy button in the drawer for later.
