Never a discharge....

So i've got a nice pile of G07 chassis that I'm rebuilding.. A few of them have the small fuse blown.. Read an article yesterday mentioning how the large cap can have a full charge when that fuse is out.. So I decided to run my discharge tool over the 2 leads on the bottom of the cap... BOOOOOOM!

Yeah, almost shit my pants..

There are 2 white marks on the screw driver now..

Respect the monitor and big cap. discharge both the tube and large cap.. discharge more than once.. just had a buddy get knocked over when he thought he heard the "pop".. there was still some juice in there..

yup, if the environment you are in is very dry its pretty common to watch the tube build up a charge again. I discharge mine 2-3 times within a few minutes.

I too was afraid, just because all instructions warned of the "impending doom" if you did it wrong. A former neighbor of mine used to work on monitors a long time ago. He threw together a makeshift discharge tool with a wire wrapped around a screwdriver, and the other end is just wire (no alligator clip). He discharged one monitor in front of me by just touching the exposed wire to the chasis and it made no pop. I finally got brave enough this year to dig out that old makeshift tool and 4 monitor discharges later, I'm relatively confident I can do this without killing myself. But I'll probably get alligator clips and hook it up the right way to do any more from now on.

Whats the link of this thing?

One of the fears for me since i have gotten Zapped before. Not trusting something that i made home made. Touching the wrong spot and getting totally zapped.

I had the scar on my finger for 10 years from getting zapped before.
They do make one, a Fluke 80k/40. The beauty of it is you get to watch the voltage drop to zero. It's also safer for the components although I'm sure everyone else and their mother will pop in and say they have never had an issue with their barbarian tool LOL :)

You can find them on eBay, search for a Fluke 80k/40:

Its made for measuring voltage in high voltage circuits and works great for discharging. You attach the ground lead to ground, the other two prong connector to your DMM and the point of the probe under the anode to discharge. Watch the voltage on the DMM drop to zero.

They regularly come up for sale in the $50 range shipped. I know I was pretty nervous when I did my first and having this tool set my mind at ease. Speaking of pop, I have only had it once when I just shut down and Amplifone monitor I was adjusting. Its super cool to stick it under the anode when the monitor is on, you can hear the electricity arc :D
