I'm thinking of creating a brand new cabinet that looks like a NeoGeo 6-slot cabinet, except the colors are blue instead of red... and it will be basically built for MAME.

Anyone have any ideas how this should look? Has anyone already made something similar? I was thinking of making some custom mini marquees for games like Donkey Kong, or perhaps entire systems like a collage of games for the SNES in one of the mini marquees.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Attached is an example of what the CPO might look like...

A member on the neo-geo forums did one. Do a google search for this: "Big Blue" Neo Geo MVS!

For a 6 button layout, I would not like that button placement. I think it would hinder game playing/enjoyment. Just my 2¢

Wow! I didn't see that. Looks sexy. I was thinking something similar, but it is definitely a MAME (and other emulators) cab I will be building from scratch. I really like the shade of blue they used.

Thanks for the input. I definitely want it to be comfortable, and I haven't prototyped this layout yet... So we'll see what it feels like and I may change it in the end. I wanted it to retain the neo geo look, but add some functionality for other games. Any suggestions for the layout?

I am thinking of doing something similar with a Dynamo HS-9A I just picked up as it kind of resembles a NeoGeo cab anyways. I like the CP as for looks and it would be interesting to see how that button layout works.

MAME for me as well running through a JPAC. I think I am going to try and squeeze a trackball on mine though as I don't have a cab with one yet.

Yeah that button layout I personally don't think would be ideal unless you wanted to do mainly Neo Geo games.
Keep the six button (grouped - Killer Instinct / Street Fighter style) setup, but move the seventh button down to the button "A" spot.
It would take some configuring per game(s) but you would retain your Neo Geo / MVS setup and have the six button setup most other fighters use.
You could also use the "A" as a run button for the MK games.

I'm experimenting with a six button Mame setup right now. It's been driving me insane with sync issues. Hopefully I'll get them figured out soon. Best of luck to ya and hope to see some pictures once this progresses.

Are there any other games that use more than 4 buttons besides some of the fighting games? I think Defender does, but you can get around that by mapping a couple things to the joystick.

The reason I ask is that I am not a big fighting game fan, but the ones I do like are NeoGeo version games and only use 4 buttons anyways.

If there are enough other good games out there that warrant a 5th and 6th button then I will go ahead and put them in mine, but I honestly don't like too many buttons.

This is my button layout that I used for a 188 in 1 pcb. I really like it, They top blue button is #4 and I also wired the bottom red to #4 as well so it works for NEo Geo Games and also Capcom Fighters. I put this in a empty cab I had laying around. It is Neo Geo Themed, but in a generic cab.

I would do your Neo 4 button "home row" on the bottom, that way you can use a traditional 6 button Capcom layout and still have the 4th Neo button placed properly (as 7th button).

The bonus feature of that is that it puts the button in about the right spot for the Reverse in Defender and Stargate.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I should have some time tomorrow to make a couple test layouts. I will post my favorite(s) based on your input here.

I was thinking I'd use my neo geo 4-25 v3 cab as a template for this project. I think I might move the speakers lower, but that's about as far as I've gotten planning the build. I will draw up some plans in autocad once I take some measurements and post those as well.

In the end, I plan on posting links to all planning materials and high res images for all art I use in case anyone wants to try to build it, or is just curious.

In any case, any ideas for mini marquees?

I made a prototype of the layout I posted above and found a couple issues.

The top row of the action buttons are slightly too close together and the bottom row spacing definitely feels wrong.

I made some variations to the original image last night and I will be building some more test cpos within the next few days.

I'll post some pictures when I get a chance.

I'd look at doing a 7 button layout. Standard 6 button layout with an extra button below them. Look at the x-gaming sticks layout. They use 8 buttons but just think of it without the bottom right button.

I took a pic of mine with the layout I was referring to. Excuse the Skittles colors of the buttons. When I originally built it, I figured it'd be easier to explain games to new players by button color.

This is my original cab, and the only attempt I made at a do-it-all panel. Thats a groovygamegear spinner in the lower right.

Looks pretty good! Thanks for giving me some inspiration! :)

Okay... So I made some changes to the original cpo. I also made a prototype of the first design a few days ago. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1351494097.116081.jpg

Here is my second revision (sorry about the angle, was in a hurry so I just snapped a pic on my phone):

I decided I didn't like the seventh button that far out, so I made a third revision:

Note that the buttons are going to be spaced out better. This should make it more comfortable.

I'll probably build a prototype of rev. 3 next week, though I probably won't waste any color on it, possibly just black and white to test before I do a final print.

Thanks to everyone for all the ideas. Additional suggestions are always welcome. I'll try to keep this thread up to date as I continue with plans for the build.

Stay tuned...

Very nice work so far! Personally, I like the blue and green designs, as the green may compliment the blue on the rest of the cab.

Thanks for the complement!! I hope it comes out.

What would you think if I went with green for the entire thing??

I've been throwing around the idea of doing a "mint" cabinet because I haven't heard of this being done before and it might be fun to do something a little different.

I also like the blue a lot and don't know if I can stand to not use it, lol. ;)

Thanks for providing the CPO layouts. I plan to use the blue one for my Neo Geo Gameroom Classics Bartop restore. Keep up with the build.
