I am looking for clarification on this one. I thought that you couldn't run a Jamma board in a Neo Geo cabinet because it would burn out the audio. But then I read that you can't run a Neo Geo board in a normal Jamma cabinet because it would burn out the audio. Which one is correct?

This answers some of your questions:
http://www.hardmvs.com/html/MVSfaq.htm

What I understand but isn't mentioned on that page is that the way the multi slot Neo Geo boards are wired for stereo sound, if plugged into a JAMMA wired cabinet can cause the audio section of the board to burn out.

I'm sure there are some Neo Geo experts out there that can verify.

I can't say for sure about the burning out, but one thing seems obvious: It won't work correctly if you plug one into the other. Jammaboards.com (and probably lots of other places) make adapters that convert from Jamma to Neo-Geo or Neo-Geo to Jamma, so if you really want to do this, just pick up the adapter board and be done with it.

OK... Let's set this straight again...

You CANNOT run a JAMMA board in a STEREO wired Neo Geo cabinet UNLESS you use a JAMMA to MVS adapter board. You WILL burn up the audio amp chip on the JAMMA board. The adapter board also fixes a couple of other odd wiring issues that won't damage boards... but rather have a couple of wires on different pins.

You CAN run a JAMMA board in a MONO wired Neo Geo cabinet and it'll work fine. You can identify these cabs by the Neo Geo board - look at the edge connector and see if it says "JAMMA" next to it.

You CAN run a mono output Neo Geo MVS board in a JAMMA cabinet. If the board is labeled "JAMMA" then it's JAMMA. You'll need to wire up the extra buttons necessary for a Neo Geo board though.

You CAN run a mono/stereo output Neo Geo MVS board in a JAMMA cabinet IF you put the audio switch in MONO mode. A couple of signals will be on the wrong pins (test or service switch is one)... and you'll need to wire up the extra buttons necessary for the Neo Geo board. IF you leave the switch in STEREO mode you'll miss 1/2 the audio but it will NOT damage the board.

You CAN run a multi slot Neo Geo board in a JAMMA cabinet. A couple of signals will be on the wrong pins (test or service switch is one... audio is the other)... and you'll need to wire up the extra buttons necessary for the Neo Geo board. YOU WILL BE MISSING PART OF THE AUDIO but it will NOT damage the board.

Makes sense. Thank you for clarifying that for me.

I have a somewhat related question. I would like to make my Contra cab, which is wired for Konami class and uses a jamma adapter and a separate 4-wire stereo J2 cable to the speakers, to be able to play all Jamma boards. When looking at the pin out of Contra vs. Jamma, Contra does not run any speaker wires to the 10-th pin because it uses a separate 4-wire connection.

Would either one of these adapters work for my situation:
