So I picked up a cool NEO GEO Tabletop mini-cab (the one that has the game files on a SD card) a while ago and purchased a MVS JAMMA board to go inside so I could play carts. I installed the board and finally got a MVS cart to test it out. I get into the game setup screen, but cannot get the game to boot. Whenever I try, I get an message that says "dip switch 1 is off". I am going to take the board out tonight to see if I can find that switch, but wanted to know if there is something else I need to check. I know that I need to get a supplemental PS to power the extra +5V for the sound, but I thought that the video would still play without it. Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dane

Matto, changing dip switch #1 did the trick. Thanks.

Any idea what kind of PS I should add for the extra 12V? Some folks have suggested just picking up a switching ps but I am not sure on which one to get.

There's not a lot of room in there, so you're not going to fit the standard size amusement switcher. But luckily you don't need a lot of power to run those 1-slot boards: 5V at ~3A, and 12V at ~1A. You can pull that off with a decent "desktop power supply" (like a power brick for a laptop), like this:

Also, you probably shouldn't be running that Neo Geo board in that bar-top game with the 5V supply that came with it (built into the monitor chassis). It was only designed to run that tiny emu PCB....

Cool, I have a couple of spare PS's like that laying around. Thanks for the suggestion. So can I just replace the power hookups on the current harness with those form the computer ps or do I need to get an entirely new harness? My goal is to be able to switch back & forth between the SD board and the MVS cart board.

Just my ps's and they have 5V at 2.6 A. Will that work? If not, can I pick up the appropriate PS at a Radio Shack?

No need to replace the harness. Both boards will run happily when you're done.
Make sure you unplug the 5V power connector on the monitor chassis. You won't be getting power from there anymore (and you don't want to be feeding any power there!).

Cool, thanks again. So If I understand correctly, I should be able to use the 5V @ 2.6 A supply that I currently have, correct? Stupid question, how do I tell which wire goes to which lead from the 5V line?

That should be sufficient. Give it a try. Play the game for an hour or so and check the temp of the power pack with your hand. Should be warm but not uncomfortable to touch.
I'll check the power rating on the one I used... I can't remember if it was 2.5A or 3A. I recall checking the current draw of the board and it wasn't anywhere near 3A....

Ahh hah! I thought that was the case. I took some pics, but could not post them here (files too large) and I was wondering about that. So now I am really confused. Should I pull the existing 5 V hookup and then hook up both the 5V and 12 V from the computer PS? If I do this, will I need to disconnect anything to run the current SD board or can it just run once set up?

Did you do a similar mod on the same type of cab? If so, do you have photos?

Sorry to be so confused. This is my first JAMMA project and I am still trying to figure out these harnesses. Thanks for all of your help.

Yes, you need to use the 5V and 12V from the new supply.
I've done exactly what you want to do. I'll post to your discussion on COS when I have time.
