Neo geo noob!

Haha, thanks guys, I appreciate it and I'm starting to get a good feel for what to go for. Don't worry about your argument eseyo and oyama, it was a really interesting read and it convinced me to stay miles away from the KOF series (just kidding ;)). I just appreciate the attention this thread has gotten, seeing this much enthusiasm over the platform makes all the more excited about it! :) (Also Oyama: what's the deal with the arcade scene in Greece? I visited Athens about six years ago and scoured every last corner looking for an arcade and found nothing, but you seem to have great knowledge on the subject.) I'll keep an eye out for Paul's thread, so far almost every eBay seller of the carts has me raising an eyebrow for one reason or another and there's enough good words about you on here to show me you know how to do a sale. Get that list up so I can give you my money! :D

And thanks Prairieed, it may be a few days before I pick it up (5 hour drive, but so worth it) but I'm pumped as hell. It's a dedicated 2 slot, in good, clean working condition, good monitor and all, still has headphone/memory card slots... got it for 199.99! I was pretty thrilled about that. I'll be sure to post lots of pics when I get it as well as the carts I decide on to incite more arguments :)

Anyone have an opinion on Waku Waku 7? One of my pals keeps saying I HAVE to get it but all I see is a crazy expensive fighting game... granted, I've never played it. Is it all it's cracked up to be?

my friend, arcades are dead in greece since 2001 because of gambling games issues.
thanks to Mame and varius video game consoles I had(and my travellings to asia),I havent stopped playing games

waku waku is a cute fighter

This is why every thread I've seen you jump in becomes a heated argument (and why I wound up jumping into this one). You make a lot of insulting presumptions about who you are talking to and what "they know", following up with super general statements. Provide me info. Popularity based off of what? Surpassed what numbers? Late 90's, which years? Where in Asia? How does it being popular in "Asia" have anything to do with other titles being popular globally? What does it have to do with constantly being passed over, if not vastly outnumbered in global tournaments (since the 90's!)?

Technically difficult? Why is this always everyone's ace up their sleeve when they want to defend their game of choice while backhanding everything else? I've played KOF98/2K2 against good Chinese players also...it doesn't contain some secret elite learning curve other 2D fighters lack. I can give you two likely reasons why they are only played casually everywhere else: 1) SNK didn't have the same high exposure it had in China/South America 2) other countries gravitated to other games because of quality, quantity and familiarity.

Evo btw. Here's an Asian major for you: Super Battle Opera. Capcom titles outnumber SNK titles this year...and IIRC every damn year since the event's debut. I've yet to see a major anywhere that has more SNK games than Capcom, let alone one where the SNK games pull in the numbers other games pull in.

Follow my lead and provide information.

Edit: Sorry to derail. Here's some more games to look for: League Bowling (although once you find the money spot it is 300 games all day), Viewpoint is an OK port on MVS, Super Dodgeball

thank God,we have internet, you can search info about it

in super battle opera kof is always there and dont forget snk doesnt make many games today neither have the quality like the older days(upcoming game is Kof 13 only),we know capcom is richer and more popular in the west, but in whole asia and latin america is still strong,go to your neighobors mexicans to see, tekken and sf are also there but who cares :)

so you have played kof,and you think its not difficult for casual gamers and has nothing special on it,ok we believe you :)

okay, I've about decided the first wave of games to get, but first I have to ask-

Sonic Wings- 2 or 3?

Which Samurai Showdown is 'best' in your opinion?

thanks

I vote for sonic wings 2(aka aero fighters 2) and samurai showdown 1,2 or 4,all are good

if I was you,I would try all the neogeo games on mame emulator first and decide which games I like very much to play and buy them
its very easy to do that, suggestions vary as you can see and dont fit to everyone

I... didn't know you could play Neo Geo games in MAME without having to mod it. You have just made things much easier. Thank you

What an incredibly lazy cop out. You talked down on people all day long on this subject but when genuinely confronted you provide jack shit to back up anything you've said ("search the Internet"...that's a compelling case you've built for yourself). GG. I'm done.

Oh yeah. Magician Lord, Super Sidekicks (I prefer 3), did I mention Super Dodgeball already?

There are also MVS specific emulators out there. You don't necessarily have to use MAME (Nebula/NeoRage).

One last question- anyone else with a MVS-2-25 style cab, how deep is it at the deepest point? Like, if the cab were laid on its back, how far would it be from back door to furthest point up? Just trying to figure out which vehicle to fit it in and which way to insert it. I was able to transport a Konami-4 Player sans CP and a Pole Position in before, for reference (At seperate times of course, not stacked =P).

BTW - the OP is from the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia USA
called "Old Dominion" and sometimes the "Mother of Presidents"

I don't see the point on getting on a soapbox to go off about popularity of KOF in Asia.
Being asian I wouldn't want to go off on China this or that...

Congrats on the pickup! An MVS is a must have for silver age gamers (late 80s-early 90s).

By Bubble Bobble, you mean Puzzle Bobble/Bust-A-Move right?

Word of advice: hardmvs.com is your friend. neo-geo.com is not.

My Top 10 (in no specific order):
1. Metal Slug
2. Bust-A-Move/Puzzle Bobble
3. Windjammers
4. Samurai Shodown II
5. Baseball Stars Pro
6. Neo Bomberman
7. Super Spy
8. Shock Troopers
9. Nightmare in the Dark (original cart is $100+)
10. Blazing Star (original cart is $100+)

KLOVers always post MVS carts in the FS section. Just gotta look. eBay is hit or miss as most of the time the prices are highly inflated. The only downside to the MVS is that there is nowhere to find repro plexi CPOs and most guys need to install a makeshift marquee light as the originals burn out and are really costly to replace.

EDIT based on Frizz's post: Yes, 150-1 is a great cost effective solution as well as long as your MVS PCB runs it okay. I plan on getting one eventually, but I've surprisingly grown my cart collection quickly. It's nice to have originals though like the last two games on my list, the only way I'll ever play these expensive games is in MAME, Multicart or Bootleg. :)

Blazing Star is that much???? I sold one on here last year for $70 shipped

My son's favorite 10 games:

Aero Fighters 3
Blue's Journey
Bust-a-Move Again
Crossed Swords
League Bowling
Magical Drop 3
Metal Slug 3
Prehistoric Isle 2
Top Hunter
Zupapa

Those are the ones we typically cycle through. He likely any kind of plane shooting game.

There reason that KOF didn't get a foothold in America is that we were too busy playing Mortal Kombat.

Also, Ninja Masters is a forgotten fighting gem.

SNK is dead.
Playmore is a joke.

Which Samurai Showdown is 'best' in your opinion?

thanks

Stick to even numbers and you will be fine.

Here is a list of what I consider must haves:

Art of Fighting 1 and 2
Fatal Fury Special
Garou Mark of the Wolves
Real Bout FFS
Last Blade 1/2
Ninja Masters
Samurai Showdown 1 2 4
KOF 96 98

Metal Slug 1 X 3 (X is a revised version of MS 2 which fixed the slowdown issues and added a few extra goodies)
Shock Troopers
Segoku 2 (best beat'em up on the neo IMO)

Neo Turfmasters
Baseball Stars 2
Windjammers

Pulstar
Blazing Star
Pulstar
Last Resort
Aero Fighters 2
Viewpoint

Other fun games that may not be considered must haves:
Ninja Commando
Burning Fight (generic but fun beat'em up)
Mutation Nation (another beat'em up)
Shock Troopers 2nd squad (not as good as the original but still fun)
Metal Slug 4 5 (still worth checking out even though people like to bash them)

Thanks guys! At the moment I have in the mail on my way:

Aero Fighters 2
World Heroes
Fatal Fury 1
Fatal Fury 2
Samurai Shodown 1
King of Fighters 94
Samurai Showdown III
Aero fighters 2

From a great bulk buy on KLOV, and I'm working on getting Blazing Star, Aero Fighters 3, and Bust a Move. I'll get the Metal Slug series next. Thanks again everyone, I'll update when I get the machine! :D

thatguy - Paul should be able to provide you with a list of many commons at bargain prices if you buy from him in bulk.

I've played all Neo Geo games and my favourite fighter is probably 'Art of Fighting 2'. It's got a great level of difficulty even on Level 1. Makes for a tough game to beat, which make it fun. Oh yeah Mr. Big is pimp.

that your country is not good at fighting games its a fact,I am not the only one saying that, you cant compare at all to asian players

Well, i'm from Canada, and a couple of weeks ago I played Tekken 4 against this Asian dude at the arcade and I totally kicked his butt... he sucked the big one. So it seems your statement is incorrect.

you can win a battle,but not a war :)
if you think you are good,go compete into a serious tournament and see what happens, thats how things count
by the way best players in the world of tekken are koreans
usa are the best in mortal kombat and killer instict, nothing else
