Yay! Finally found a Neo for a price I could afford and won the auction. Thing is it doesn't come with any carts and while I used to play a lot of Neo Geo games, I don't remember most of the names and in retrospect a lot of them sucked. So I was wondering what the "must haves" were, preferably on the more affordable end. I already know I want Bubble Bobblebut I'd like to get a couple more. I have burning lust for any good SHMUPS, I like fighters okay, and side-scrolling madness quarter munchers that are so bad they're good (like Cyber Lip) are nostalgic enough for me to stand. But, if there are any less-definable gems, I'd love them too. Thanks for the input! (and while I was planning on ebaying most of the carts, if anyone is trying to sell some games they could honestly reccomend, I'd prefer to purchase from a KLOVER to support the community and whatnot).

Congrats on the pickup! An MVS is a must have for silver age gamers (late 80s-early 90s).

By Bubble Bobble, you mean Puzzle Bobble/Bust-A-Move right?

Word of advice: hardmvs.com is your friend. neo-geo.com is not.

My Top 10 (in no specific order):
1. Metal Slug
2. Bust-A-Move/Puzzle Bobble
3. Windjammers
4. Samurai Shodown II
5. Baseball Stars Pro
6. Neo Bomberman
7. Super Spy
8. Shock Troopers
9. Nightmare in the Dark (original cart is $100+)
10. Blazing Star (original cart is $100+)

KLOVers always post MVS carts in the FS section. Just gotta look. eBay is hit or miss as most of the time the prices are highly inflated. The only downside to the MVS is that there is nowhere to find repro plexi CPOs and most guys need to install a makeshift marquee light as the originals burn out and are really costly to replace.

EDIT based on Frizz's post: Yes, 150-1 is a great cost effective solution as well as long as your MVS PCB runs it okay. I plan on getting one eventually, but I've surprisingly grown my cart collection quickly. It's nice to have originals though like the last two games on my list, the only way I'll ever play these expensive games is in MAME, Multicart or Bootleg. :)

top ten from a hardcore neogeo fan:

1)king of fighters 98 or 2002
2)metal slug
3)samurai showdown 2
4)shock troopers
5)aero fighters 2
6)puzzle pobble
7)garou mark of the wolves
8)last blade 2
9)blazing star
10)street hoops

MVS has a bit of everything.
Get what you like... just do some research. And divide it up by genre. I actually like to see how it plays on youtube. Almost every game is up there and there's a bunch of top 10 lists for MVS games.

Theres lots of action shooters, vert shooters and fighting games.
Everyone loves Metal Slug which is unique to the machine. (for the arcade) I recommend #2.

There's no bubble bobble but Puzzle Bobble.
Nightmare in the dark is sorta like a cross between GnG theme in Bubble Bobble gameplay.

Thanks eseyo! I haven't actually picked it up yet, I literally JUST won the cab actually, haha. I wanted to have some carts on order so I could get it running sooner rather than later. Your list will be a life saver, and I had forgotten many of those titles. Thanks for the help!

Friz- I'll look into that... I was going to try to keep it "pure" and "legit" but DAMN does that look tempting =P Thanks!

To the for sale section! *gets in Fygarmobile*

I have some carts for sale. Pretty much any title as well. Am I right Jess and Johnnie?

I haven't posted any for sale yet but will soon.

Yup, Paul is a good man and he has a good number of carts (some gems) to sell. Look out for his list.

I've never been a fan of SNK style fighting games with the exception of a few. I mean, I played them as a kid and some are memorable (SSII, Ganryu, etc.), but in all honesty they are mediocre as far as the fighting genre goes. Though, I am a bit biased towards Capcom fighting games. IMHO, I think an MVS without KoF will do just fine. :)

ss2 and kof are mediocre games...no wonder why you americans suck in fighting games!

I don't get this statement. Because these games are mediocre, that makes Americans suck at fighting games? Do you know what mediocre means? I never said they were bad games, but as far as presentation, replay value, characters, depth and technical aspect, SNK fighting games are mediocre. I never said they were bad. But if I had to choose between Samurai Shodown or SFII, I'd choose SFII every time.

Aren't the major fighting game competitions usually centered around Capcom fighting games? I'm not a competitor, so I could be wrong. Though, I don't see them making runs of KoF and SS Tournament Edition joysticks. I see a lot of SFIV and MvC ones though.

Also, one thing to note, not smart to bash Americans in an American forum. :D

ok,like you said, you arent a big fan of fighting games,so you dont know which are the best of the best
telling samurai showdown and kof mediocre fightings,is like telling sonic the hedgehog is a bad platform game
its not bad to suck games,I am awful player on most games :)

How do you know I'm not a big fan of fighting games? I grew up playing them. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I'm not saying you're wrong for thinking they are above average fighting games, but my point was that they are not so great that you need to have them in your MVS lineup. We could go on and on debating what's the best fighting game, but that's another thread.

I just didn't understand your statement about Americans sucking at fighting games. There are plenty of good American players on EVO (http://evo2k.com/). By the way, do you see KoF or Samurai Shodown listed there anywhere? Is there a reason those franchises never reached the success of SF? The answer is because they were never that great. Maybe I was a bit harsh saying they were mediocre. How about I just end saying that they were good, but not as good as the SF series. That's just my opinion though.

Just don't see your reasoning between insulting American gamers and claiming you know whether or not I'm a fan of fighting games. :)

Side note: Sonic the Hedgehog was great for a moment and a decent platform game, but again, I can name a handful of other platform series that are much better. Super Mario for example. The Sonic franchise has resulted into making mediocre games for little kids. Compare Sonic game ratings to Mario game ratings and you'll get what I'm saying. ;)

evo had kof tournaments before, plus in all japanese tournaments kof is always there all those years, with the best players being from japan and china, youtube and internet forums are full of information

if you were a serious fightings games gamer, you would be aware of kof's success,it doesnt mean because in usa is not succesful and you cant find it anywhere there is mediocre
you can go a trip to whole asia and south america and see which fighting games are playing in the arcades now and before

american fighting gamers are not making good at all at serious tournaments, thats a fact

sonic in general was and is the only perfect alternative to mario, remember the 16bit wars
newer mario games are not better than the older ones anyway

Again, I never said they weren't successful. I just said they were not as successful. I also reworded my statement of saying they were mediocre to saying they were good, just not as good. Apparently, you're not reading my posts.

And I never said that non-Americans are not good at fighting games. Never in any of my reasoning did I insult you or anyone else or country. Whether you're from Japan, Korea, China, USA, etc. no one can deny that no fighting game in history has had more of an impact than the Street Fighter series. I know that other franchises are still going strong like Tekken and even KoF overseas.

But again, you're making arguments with the assumption that I know nothing of fighting games because I'm not acknowledging that KoF or Samurai Shodown are as good as SF. I don't claim to be the best as we're both probably casual gamers, but insulting a country or a gamer because they don't share the same opinion about a game doesn't seem like a valid argument.

Keyword: Alternative. Yes, I remember the 16-bit wars and beyond. Nintendo won out. When was the last Sega console made? Who had to save Sega's Sonic franchise by licensing their games? Oh yeah, Nintendo. And I never said the newer Mario games were better than the old ones.

that your country is not good at fighting games its a fact,I am not the only one saying that, you cant compare at all to asian players
me and my country neither can compare of course :)
its an insult for me telling that kof and ss are not as good as sf,you throw away a whole history and a whole community of millions which they follow these games(at least kof for sure)
