I bought this MVS 2 cab complete, but disassembled last weekend from fellow KLOVer Payment Due. It was stripped down mosst of the way and ready for fixin'. I spent most of the last week (I'm self employed so I gave myself the week off) getting it restored. All that is left is to apply the sideart, which came with the cab.
Main work involved was...
-Finish Bondo work on cab. (had a CP corner that needed reapair) and sand entire cab smooth..
-Kilz the inside of cab. and later paint over Kilz with satin black paint ( had a slight hint of urine smell to it).
- One coat of primer and two coats of paint. Paint was Sherwin Williams oil based paint. In case anyone is interested, the paint color used is basically Sherwin Williams "cherry tomatoe" color, just a bit lighter. when they mix that color in a oil based satin, the color gets lighter than the color sample is, and it is a pretty good match to original IMO.
-Strip the coin door and paint with several layers of Rustoleum Hammered Finish paint. I also bouth new coin door plastics, since the old ones looked really bad.
The CP has a new overlay from ArcadeOverlays with transparent red sheeting over the credit LEDs to make it look as original as possible. The sticks are Sanwa bat tops with the round plates on the bottom for smooth 360deg. movement. The buttons are Sanwa as well, since I prefer them over the standard US style buttons.
-The marquee has minis I printed up from files here - http://www.arcadecrusade.com/gallery/v/minimarquees/. The fixture is new and has a blacklight bulb in it. This is my first game to try this in and I like the result. The Neo Geo lettering glows nicely as do the home-printed minis. I have blacklight carpet so it goes well with that. I also sanded and painted the marquee brackets with Rustonleum semi-gloss.
-The memory slot plate had been painted over, but fortunately the paint was latex and it came off with Magic Eraser.
-The monitor worked great to start with, but the flyback was original and had several cracks in the face near the adj. knobs. So I replaced the flyback and did a cap kit to prevent having to do it in the near future.
-It didn't come with a Neo motherboard, only Super Sidekicks 2. So I bought a great working mobo from Pengo. It's a 1 slot MV-1F, which is fine with me because I am just going to have a 120 in 1 board in it. The 1 slot mobo is JAMMA and the cab's connector isn't. Well it almost is, but not quite. I just had to remove the stereo speaker wire connectors from the edge connector and wire them up to a different connector that goes to a different stereo output connector on the mobo. And I had to move the test switch connector to a different location in the edge connector. I think that was it, anyway it wasn't a big deal at all.
Well, take a look. Not bad for a weeks worth of work. I have to fix em' fast cause I'm silly like that, and I won't keep a "project" in the small arcade room I have. I also don't have much garage space to keep it in, so that is even more drive to get it done quickly.
