I have a 2 slot. It came with 2 games. Its well used and dirty in there. Both games have the vertical lines in and around the characters on the screen etc. This happens with both slots.

Per HardMVS, I got the electronics cleaner from Radio Shack. I opened the carts and cleaned the contacts. I opened the PCB case, removed the pcb and cleaned the contacts also removing all the tick turds etc from the board (gently) with a soft toothbrush.
All of the contacts had some small areas of residue. I used the eraser tip lightly but really did not remove all of the little lines on the contacts.

Re-assembled and turned on. Better but basically the same problem. Could there be something else or do I just have to suck it up and scrub those contacts? Also, how do I really clean the slots on the pcb?

You might have to clean the cartridge slots themselves too. Fold up some clean white copy paper to the thickness of a cart circuit board and press it into the cartridge connector. Pull it straight out - and look at all those dirty lines on it. Do it to both connectors in each cart slot - wet with alcohol if it's really bad.

To clean cart edge connectors, scrub thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol on a paper towel or q-tip. Don't go too heavy with the eraser or you'll take the gold plating off.

also i just dealt with a 1 slot that had lines on the screen
it ended up being a corooded leg on one of the gfx chips on the mobo cleaned and reseated and works `100%
you may also wantto check channel's repair logs he has done quite a bit with the mvs

Thanks for the props on my repair logs!

The 2 slot line issue could be: dirty carts, dirty slots, corroded or gouged traces, or a bad NE0-257 custom IC.

I don't diagnose a bad IC until I go through and clean the carts/slots then search carfully for bad traces. This includes using a logic probe to find the missing signals then checking the associated traces with a continuity check.

I have cleaned the carts, cleaned the slots, cleaned the board. I see no rusty or broken connections.

I used a new 120-in-1 that arrived today (thanks Nix) and the problem remains.

The screen is fine on the main menu for the 120-in-1. When it goes to a game the problem starts. Any further thoughts?

Anyone have a spare 2 slot board?

pics?

Any pics?
sounds like a 1 slot I am working on as well..
Interesting to see if its the same.. :)
Ill have to find the thread lol

try booting it up with no cart present

and see if the lines are there the cross hatch screen would be ideal to check for the lines
(on the one slot i was working on the lines were there but hard to notice it just looked like a pixel wos missing from each section from top to bottom spaced out across the monitor )

Hey Nevus,

Great to meet you today!

To close out the thread, the board had a leaking NiCD battery that damaged a couple of traces. Cleaned up the board and jumpered two bad traces between the NE0-ZMC2 chip and one of the NE0-257 ICs. One new battery later and a bit of fingernail polish to tack down the 30ga Kynar wire and it was done.

This goes in the books as quickest out of town repair.

Take the kids on vacation to the Great Wolf Lodge. Find out that the very person responding to your repair thread lives 10 minutes from the place your staying. Meet a new friend. Get your board fixed. Back on the water slides shortly thereafter.

Thanks a bunch for helping me out. Double thanks for giving me service while I waited. :)

WOOHOO! :D

Glad I could help breathe new life into that board for you.

bumping thread mostly so I can find it again.

Channelmanic you rock.

Plugged in my mv1-fz that hadn't been used in a year and it worked fine for hour and then I started getting vertical lines through all the graphics. I knew it wasn't the cart because it worked fine in my 2-slot.

Sorry I didn't take a pic but basically there was one minor spot on a trace that looked like a piece of solder was on it. Checked it out and sure enough it was broken. Quick jumper and it is fully working again.
