OK, Neo Geo guys- I need your help. Ever since I sold my MAME rig, my kids have be clammering for the fighting games that they played on it. I don't want to build another MAME machine, so I thought a Neo Geo cab would be a great option. I never played Neo Geo growing up, so I don't have any particular attachment to it- but I know my kids would love it, making me love it too.

So, I was thinking a 1-slot with one of the 150-1 multicarts or a 2-slot?? (a 4-slot is too big for my game room.) Do the multicarts suck? I'd like a dedicated machine in pretty nice shape- what should I expect to pay??

I haven't used the multicart, but I'd try to get a 2 or 4 slot. Not everything's on the multi, so you'll want the spare slot for some other game that you'll like.

Prices vary wildly based on local (more so than other titles it seems). I had a dedicated 4 slot about 5/6 years ago - bought it for $73 at auction, sold it at a garage sale a couple years later for $250 or $300 I think.

I just recently built a Neo out of an empty Z-Back I had laying around, and put a 138-in-1 in it. I think it has the best game selection out of the multicarts. People complain about the long boot times, but I don't think it's bad.

There are a ton of fighting games on it, but also lots of other genres as well.

Nixs has the 150-1 multicart for $100. I wonder what the differences are...

About 12 games. :p

But really, the bigger ones are missing some of the better games. I think Ghostlop and Twinkle Star Sprites etc are only available on the 138. Tighe's blog has a good comparison of them all.

Thanks for doing the math

I'll check out Tighe's blog- thanks. So those are good games? Never even heard of them...

I have the 138 in my single slot cab, the boot delay is very annoying but the game selection is pretty good. My teenage sons like all the fighting games and my little girls like the Puzzle Bobble games. I like it for the Metal Slug games and Viewpoint. The multis have something for everyone.

I love my Neo Geo, I have a one slot now, and I believe it is the same size as my old four slot. The Koam cabs are beasts.

I have heard great things about the multi carts. The folks I know who have them rave about them.

If you need a MOBO, I will have a two slot for sale soon.

I guess the 2 and 4-slot are the same size- didn't even realize. I love that mini!

I have been thinking about building one of the lil guys this winter. They also made a 19 inch wood grain "mini".

I cannot say enough positive things about the Geo, it's such a versatile system.

If I'm not mistaken the 138-in-1 board won't work on a multislot PCB without an adapter. The 138-in-1 has a daughter board that needa a jamma edge. Only the 1 slots (most of them) have a standard jamma edge. There is a 161-in-1 cartridge out now (similar to the 150) but be advised that when you run these on a multi slot board that you have to unpopulate the other slots anyways, so you may as well just look for a single slot!

Because the 138 has a pass through JAMMA edge connector and they did not pass through the game selection button you just need to jumper those pins on your cart edge connector/adaptor. It will take someone 10 mins if they have the right stuff.

The wood grain cab is not a mini as much as its a cabaret compared to the big reds.

You can't go wrong with a 138, 150 or 160

Only the 138 can disable games from the menu, which is an important feature for me
Kids reallistically won't be switching gamesthat often as long as they know what game they are looking for. If yu are trying out new games, it can be painful.

Twinkle Star Sprites is on the 120 in 1 as well.

The Neo Geo is close to jamma, and there is an adapter available. That will let you swap in PCBs of some of the non Neo fighters. With a jpac, it would also be a really easy machine to use for MAME as well if you ever decided you wanted to in the future.

I have a 1 slot with a 161 in 1 and have no issues. Good selection. I also like that on the last dip it acts as a pause feature. I soldered some wire up to a toggle , so if the phone rings........the pause is great

With the exception of the 138-in-1, they all simply plug into the mobo exactly like a mvs cart. If you read otherwise, it's just a mistake.

I have a 2-slot mini with 161-in-1 and it's literally plug and play. Some multicarts just work better in 2+ slot mobos though.

Ah, I got it- probably my mistake. I really want one of these now...
