Label has Neo-MVH MV1FS on the board. When I turn it on all I get is a green screen with a little bit of garbage. One time I got a Z80 error. I removed the battery because there was corrosion on the pin.

Game does the same with or without a cartridge plugged in.

Any ideas on where to start?

You can try this question at neo-geo.com, they have a tech section. I wish I could be more help

Thanks. I found that forum last night and learned quite a bit.

Noticed battery corrosion on the board and went to a couple of chips (6116, crystal, and one other). Still debating on attempting to fix this or not.

Hit up Channelmaniac.
I sent a bord to him for repair, quick turn, works great!

Thanks for the props!

Troxel, you have a PM with my rates.

If you have a system that is stuck on green then the clock/calendar circuit is not working right. Check pin 14 of the D4990 IC for 5v when the board is powered up. If it's missing, that's your problem...

BUT!!! DO NOT hook it to +5v!!! Follow the trace back and it will go to the battery backup circuit. Somewherer between that battery backup circuit and the D4990 will be a trace that has been damaged by the leaking battery.

Clean up the battery damage as best as you can then find that bad trace.

Once you do that, try it again without a cart. If the Z80 error shows up then you either have an MV1C board which will do that, or you have another model of board and have a problem with the digital part of the sound circuitry.

The Z80 Error message is a "catch all" message that means "I can't communicate with the sound subsystem" - it can be a bad trace, bad chip between the 68K CPU and the Z80 CPU, a bad Z80, 6116 SRAM, or sound ROM, or YM2610 chip.

Most likely: Bad Z80 since it really should've been a Z80A installed and SNK went cheap and overclocked a Z80 instead.

If you get a crosshatch screen without a cart installed and a Z80 Error with a cart installed then you have a dirty cart, a dirty slot, or a bad trace between the Z80 and the cart slot.

Great info, thank you! I decided to ship the board off to you for repair. Figured it's going to be more than a bad trace. I think I have a couple faulty chips on it.

thanks,
Theron
