i have a chance to pick up a neo geo cabinet game in it is

samurai shodown amakusa's revenge

cabinet is great.. buttons joysticks all work.. monitor has no burns in it

i can get it for $175

i wanna put Double dragon in it and go jamma but keep original stuff to go back to original

is this worth it? or should i pass and wait... i think its a good deal.. wanna make sure with you guys before pulling the trigger

If it's a dedicated neo geo cabinet with the 25" monitor? Hell yes that's a good price.

when you say dedicated to you mean made for that game? cause i think thats the case.. what should i look for when i get there to make sure its what i need?

The dedicated Neo Geo was the big red cabinet with SNK logos on the side, striped control panel, and had a marquee with a slot to change out instruction cards. Inside you'll see a motherboard with a cartridge in it.

Alot of times I've seen the neo geo stuff thrown into typical Dynamo style cabs with the marquee and control panel overlays slapped on. They were usually in 19" monitor style cabs when done like this. Don't get me wrong, if it was working, even one of those is worth the asking price. You can always go thru and buy the multi neogeo cart and play all the games from one cart slot.

it really depends on the cab, and how it's dressed.

It's most likely a converted black cab.
It could be a single slot red/black cab from SNK or a white dedicated SS2 cab (rare)

Take a close look at the control panel also. Conversions have bad art on them typically.

Single slots are basically JAMMA wired. You can probably double check the harness and then plug in your DD board and plug the D buttons (blue)

$175 sounds a fair price. Note that all SNK produce cabs were 25" but the 19" wood grain and the super rare 13" mini MVS.

Hardmvs.com is a good resource.

Please do not jamma this and make it double dragon. Its a dedicated smamurai showdown 2 cab from the sound of it,Which is very hard to find. Please post some pics and snag it up quick, that's a sweat price!!!

i have not intentsion of ruining the cab.. i will leave it as it is just wire jamma in to play double dragon... when i can find a dedicated taito or something similar put the DD in there and go back to original neo geo..

Hit the gallery at http://www.hardmvs.com and study the shapes. Most cabs come in one of two basic styles, black base and all red. If you can nail what those two look like, you're practically on your way to telling if it is a legit Neo Geo or not.

As mentioned, people tend to toss the board in some generic cab, slap the SNK conversion decals on it and there yah go! It's a Neo Geo buddy! I've also had empty red Z-Backs innocently tagged as a "Neo Geo cabinet".

...but if you wanna toss other JAMMA games in there, maybe any generic cab will do for your needs. ?? Happy hunting.

+1

killing a ded MVS cab would be bad!
swapping out a conversion is ok.

If it's one of these:

They are absolutely worth $175. Very cool cabinets, and kind-of rare. Please don't convert it to Jamma... Neo Geo wiring is close enough to Jamma, get an adapter and call it a day (that way you need not hack). This one might actually BE Jamma, especially if it's only running a 1-slot for the Samurai Showdown cart. Then you don't need to do anything to it. Just enjoy!

Please post pics when you get it, especially if it's the dedicated Samurai Showdown shown above.

i just talked with him...this is how he described it...

"the whole things is black... the face on the top is red.. and the flat part with the controls is also red"

so im not sure what i'll find... but as long as its not the 13" monitor i'll be happy

i was looking at this and not sure what one it will be... he said first player controller is black, second is red...

he really has no clue what he's talking about so its tough to get actual accurate info from him

Descriptions are pretty worthless... pics however are priceless. Frankly, for the money as long as the cab is not falling apart you will be fine. Once you get it we can help you figure out how to modify it for Jamma boards such as Double Dragon.

well i have a jamma harness... what i was going to do was just leave the harness thats in it now the way it is... and set up the jamma harness over it... marking all the cables thats set up now for quick reconnect.. only problem i konw i'll run into is with the monitor... I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT ANYTHING WITH THEM.. not ever sure what recapping is or how it works.. or why its good...

ha ha i really know nothing about them...

Let me translate.

Converted black cab.
Red Marquee
Control panel red (some HS1 modular control panels had Red Metal painted tops)
The Joysticks are miss matched colors, red and black. Handles are $4

Get a pic! If it's a single slot then it's JAMMA. All single slots will be JAMMA

Don't wire in a second harness. The worst case scenario here is the cab is SNK specific and you need to build or buy an adaptor to play regular Jamma games. Frankly, since the game is most likely a conversion it is also most likely Jamma already.

We can walk you through the monitor, and there are likely a few members close to you who are willing to help you as well.

let me ask you guys this...

is there any reason this would not be worth 175 bucks?

other than the monitor not working... he says its good... and as far as a picture goes he can't send one... says he doesn't have the ability with a camera and stuff

As long as the monitor is in solid shape, power works, all the wiring is there, you should be good to go.

Sounds like you are going to have to go take a look in person and see how it sounds and plays first hand before making a final choice.

For neo geo stuff I personally like cabs with 25 or 27 inch screens. If it happens to be 19 (likely) or 13 and you play it and are happy with it I say pick it up. If you have any second thoughts about how it looks or plays skip it.

175 for a working 25 inch JAMMA is fine. It's fine for a 19 inch as well. If you can't provide pics, we can't provide good advice anyways.

This sounds like your first time to the rodeo, so lemme give you a bit of advice on your first purchase: if you see it, play it and want it: get it. If you're gonna worry over getting your money out of it, you're leaping into this entire hobby a little sideways.

The next one, sure, price it out. The third one, fine. The first one, if you want it and you can afford it, then just get the xp and buy the thing. Worse comes to absolute worst with THIS machine you have a pile of wood to take to the dump, possibly a spare monitor and a 1-slot MVS board you can throw into the next cabinet (or sell for 60-100). A lot of us here did a lot worse than 175 for our first machine.
