I bought a working NeoGeo 1-slot today, but when I brought it home, it came up with "Z80 ERROR." I have reseated all the connections and sockets I can find, but it still wont boot. The Z80 is not socketed, so I cannot easily replace it. Could it be that the Neogeo motherboard just happen to kill itself inbetween the time I tested it and the time I got it home?

Remove the cart. If it boots without the error then clean the slot and cart.

I do flat rate repairs on Neo Geo systems... $35 for non-surface mount and $40 for surface mount repairs. Doesn't include batteries, board interconnects, or slot connectors. (Plus shipping)

There is a one slot version of the board, MV1B I think (I forget which exactly) that will give that error when booting without a cart.

OK,

Could be a leaking battery that ate a few traces... or a bad chip in the digital sound section of the board.

The Z80 ERROR message is a catch all for the main CPU (68K) not being able to talk to the sound subsystem. It could be a bad trace, Z80 CPU, SRAM IC, sound ROM, or YM2610 sound chip.

Most likely a bad trace or dead Z80. SNK had a habit of using Z80 chips instead of the Z80A that it needed.
