I want to buy Bob's but a friend needs a tube degaussed and I won't be able to get it in time. Anyone know a good source for wire? I will buy Bob's at some point, so I don't want to pay good money for wire when I could repurpose wire from an old motor or something. How many windings do I need to make? I have read that they suggest 22 gauge wire.

Just pull a degaussing coil from an old TV and direct wire it to 120v. It will get hot with use but it will work fine.

Because of how hot it gets make sure you only have it plugged in when you need to use it and unplug it after use.

an electric drill held backwards achieves the same result.

I only have a battery one, and the shadow mask is seriously magnetized.

I may try this, but I was hoping to make something less make-shift.

I built one with an old degaussing ring, a switch, a light bulb & fixture, and appliance cord. It's crude, but powerful. Works good for me.

I found the DIY somewhere on the net. I'll look and see if I can find it.

EDIT: Found it...

Awesome! Looks like I can get the wire really cheap!

Edit: although I do have a spare tube degauss coil too....

If you have magnets from a hard drive laying around... grab your drill... and one of the wood boring bits (flat)...stick one to one side and one to the other...

Stand back... start drill...move drill toward monitor with magnets spinning....

Move around....

...pull back....

Done.

I am not going near a monitor with a neodymium magnet even if you are spinning it, there is a good risk of bending the hell out of the shadow mask. Those magnets are too powerful.

Bah... prior to owning a degaussing coil I used this method at least a dozen times without so much as an issue....

That's what I use. Works well.

I doubled it over (bend into figure 8, continue to a single loop), and taped it up that way. I have it wired to a plug, and I plug it into a power strip with a switch on it. I use my foot to turn it on and off.

Degauss promptly... it'll start getting warm in a few seconds.

Thanks for everyone who responded in this post. I just performed a tube swap for a G07 and was looking for a cheap way to degauss.

When you go to RS ask for the VHS eraser. Might have one kicking around. Ive seen them at local ones here recently for $5.
