Need tips restoring the wood on a Pole Position 2 Cockpit

Hey guys, hope all is well. I'm restoring a newly acquired Pole Position 2 Cockpit, that got damaged during the move. I did split it in half and butchered it, I put "L" brackets on the bottom where the bad cut was made, and then I'll put a Diamond Steel Plate on top,to join the two halves together. I ordered 65" ft of Black T-Molding for the whole cab,and tips on installing it ? Also what do you recommend me using to repair the damages at the corners of the cabinet? On the right side of the cabinet, towards the middle on the bottom, where I made the split,I went in too deep, and sliced a little too much off, what can I use to fill in the gap ? I have Satin Black and Stain White for touch ups in the cab. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you

As much as I hate to say it, these pictures are full of fail. Why the gaping hole in the wood? Why not a clean, thin cut to separate the halves? If you're going to get diamond plate, why wouldn't you get a big enough piece to cover the entire floor? I don't have any easy answers for you unfortunately. I hope you figure out a good solution but it seems to me that you created more work for yourself than you needed to.

I appreciated your honesty, you guys are the experts here. Regarding the cut, my hand kind of slipped and that's why it ended up the way it is now. Trust me, I feel really bad about it, I actually destroyed it. I thought the plate is big enough once it cover both halves and almost the entire floor ?

Phetish, trust me,I feel like crap every time I look at it. Even my dad is pissed at me,very pissed. I hope with the "L" brackets on the bottom and the plate on top does the trick :/

I agree on the diamond plate. Get a piece big enough to cover the entire floor. You could have someone with a plasma cutter (not you) cut a larger sheet to shape. While the seat and sides are pretty straightforward, the front juts in like 2 inches for the pedals. Having too small a piece that just covers the center looks and seems silly.

nWoHogan, please don't feel too bad. The reality is that these things are cumbersome and difficult to get into a home when you have to deal with stairs, tight corners, etc. You did what you had to do, it's done, and you'll get it fixed back up.

You are right,Scottmaggie did the same thing. I'll see what I can do, I'll make that a first priority today, thanks

Thanks Pimpbot,I know I tried my best, but could of done a little better, but I'm determined to get it right. I'm working on the plate right now. Now I need some ideas on the edges of the cab

what if you cleaned up your cuts, cut back some more with some kind of guide for your saw to ride along this time for a straight cut. Then sister in some plywood from under the floor bigger then width of the area you cut screw in down from each side of your cuts then striped in the middle with another piece of ply screwed down to the first piece that way now the floor is one level piece again then installed a bigger piece of diamond plate done and you still could take it apart if need be.

Hey man, I don't want you to feel too bad about it. You post pics like that and it's our obligation to poke fun. Phet's first reply made me laugh! But seriously, I'm sure you'll get it fixed up and no one will know the difference when it's all done.

About the only advice I could give is you could look at how spy hunter cockpits separate and do something similar to that. Downside to that is you see bolt heads which will obviously not look standard to anyone who knows pole position cockpits, but upside would be easy separation in the future. Here's one thread as an example: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=57568 I could provide some more info on how that works if you need because I've got a spy hunter cockpit too, but you can probably find good info about it if you google the forums.

Gameover, great idea and thank you. I just came back from home depot, got some pieces of wood. I'll give it a shot and keep everyone posted.TheShanMan,I understand and appreciate it. I'll try my best to get it looking right. And thank you for that link, I did some research on the forums and I should be ok. Any ideas on the fixing the corners of the cab ?
