So I've been itching for a new project and am thinking about making a mini/micro cab only just big enough to fit the inner workings of a JAMMA rig with the switcher, wires, and a 60-in-1. I was thinking that an LCD monitor from an old POS portable DVD player would make a nice donor for the cause. The thing is, I haven't got the first clue how to go about getting one wired to function properly. Would I need a certain type of video encoder or the like? Does anyone know of any links out there that show the basics of transplanting these types of monitors? I've seen the PSOne montitors gutted a few times but I think I'd need something a little bigger...

Ideas?

You would probably need one of the CGA->LCD signal doublers. There are several on Ebay for $50 or so. Plus you would need an LCD screen.

It just happens that I was looking into building something similar and just scored some 7" VGA LCD screens that I will be picking up today or Monday.

I was also going to look into putting one into a small box for use as a bench monitor since desk space is always at a premium.

The 60-in-1 boards can use a VGA monitor so you there is never a need for a doubler from CGA to VGA.

Cool. Even better. Now if those little trackballs they used to put on laptops would work (and I could find some) that would be sweet!

The PSOne lcd does CGA arcade resolutions and can be picked up pretty cheap

There was a complete guid on how to do it but I googled a bit and can't find it. I did find this:
http://www.bit-tech.net/modding/2004/07/07/psone_lcd/2
which shows the RGB and sync inputs

Maybe you were looking for JRok's page?

Edit: here is the other place I had a bookmark for this type of thing.

Thanks for the insight guys... I'll check out these sites and see if they'll get me started!

I'd consider the PSOne screen, but I'd like to use a real arcade joystick (a smaller one, like the cocktail pacs use) and buttons and I think when you consider scale, the screen would look pretty dinky in comparison... I have a 7-inch portable DVD LED screen that I think would look a little better size-wise.

Hoping my DVD LCD screen that I plan to hack will work fairly simply without any add-ons. Perhaps a direct RGB-type connection to the JAMMA harness would work?

So, you trying to build one of these?

Or something similar?

Yeah, something like that... I had an old Coleco tabletop Pac Man game I hacked in to a mini-MAME machine awhile ago using a PDA and it crapped out on me. Ever since I've given thought to making a machine from scratch as small as I could using standard buttons/joys and a "real" boardset of some kind that would play like the real deal(the PDA game I made ran poorly and I couldn't get sound without making it even worse).

As for the overall look, I'm going for a modified styling of the new tabletop pac-reunion machines Namco put out recently. Can't swing for a big 19" LCD tho', so I'll cannibalize an LCD not in use right now and go for a smaller design and merge the look of that tabletop one with a classic pac machine somehow... Still trying to work it out! :)

No. But that is sick. I love it. :dance3:

I was just trying to put a very small monitor together to minimize desk space.

If anybody is looking for some 7" LCD VGA monitors, I have some that I am willing to part with. I ended up with a bunch (20+) and only need a couple to play with. I'll let them go for $20 each + shipping. PM me for details.
