Need some testers for Pole Position and Pole Position 2 mod

I started a thread about Pole Position but did not get any feedback (well the feedback was most people have Pole Position II). So I have a version for Pole Position II now as well.

There are still a couple of glitches I am working out (see if you can find them) but would like people to try them out to get some feedback before I finish them and post them to my website

You can download the rom images here
CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is welcome

I'll be sure to give this a try in my PP2.
(... hopefully soon, ...although my week is a write-off so far... )

Thanks Jason.

Forgive my lack of EPROM knowledge, but I would like to give it a try.

I would be having someone else burn it for me however. It looks like just one EPROM, is this correct? If so, where on the board is it?

Thanks again for doing this stuff Jason. Pac 4-1 3.3 is tits:)

Thanks for the kind words
Each one is a one eprom swap

PP replaces 136014.105
PPII replaces 136014.180

There are still some glitches (Beta) so don't spend any money on having it burned until the final version. You can try it in MAME first to see what you think

Originally the freeplay/credits were only displayed on the "select track" screen.
The user did not know in attract mode if it was freeplay or credits or how many credits.
Now I display it occationally in attract mode. Also, when you drop a coin it makes the coin drop sound, the previous version did not do this

What type of glitches? I may want to try this...

I just realized in this thread I did not describe what the mod was doing. Here was the original post.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looking to update Pole Position (Maybe Pole Position II after this is done) so that it has free play with attract mode and does not start until you press the gas pedal. The free play on it is kind of weak and even coin mode starts as soon as you drop a coin. I don't own a Pole Position so if you have one and also have an eprom burner to burn new roms let me know. Currently I can only test in MAME.

I have interest in both of these. I can only test pole position1 atm my pole 2 board is down. I half to run out for a few but I will burn this tonight for pole1 and report back.

Thanks for sharing this.

I have PP I and two of the PPII all working..

as I JUST yesterday had an arcade party.. it REALLY was a pain not to be able to put tons of credits on PPII to let the kids just come up and play...

since it just started after a bit..

would like that mod/fix you have.. but alas.. no burner.. :) unless someone would like to burn for me and send :)

maybe after the last clitches are fixed?

I have interest in both PP and PPII as I have a sitdown and upright now running..

Pole position II is pretty much done, just needs some testing.
I kind of abandoned PP I since everyone said PPII is where it's at.
If there is a demand for PPI, I will update it to match PPII

Well yea there is a need for pp1... I am erasing a 2764 right now so I can lay down the pp1 file you provided.

I say it would be about 1 hour before I can test.

I added pp1 to my mame set up to do some testing as well. I didn't notice any difference at all. I am sure im doing something wrong on the mame deal, do you have any pointers?

Hum My Bp ep-1140 keeps giving me this below with a clean AMD am2764 eprom in it.
----
Failed to perform operation on device.
Hardware timeout.
----
I am looking around now for some different eproms. I have never had this issue before...

Edit I found some Mitsubishi M5L2764k's of course they are not blank... lol brb

Ok the Mitsubishi 2764 worked like a dream... Now my machine works fine no issues at all except some of my colors are off a bit on my monitor.

Here is what I have after the install of the new eprom.

PP1 beta testing issues.
---
1) Lost high gear
2) First game runs automatically no need to hit the gas pedal.
3) After the first game then you can hit the gas pedal to start another game
4) Sometimes the game starts automatically with out hitting the gas
5) Credits never go away
6) Push start button wording when the hack is working, Should say press gas pedal for start or something like that.
---

Nice first round with the pp1 beta hack congrads...

Wow, it does not do any of that in MAME... I guess the real hardware is alot different.

Can you confirm your romset is Atari version 2?

Issue 1, can you confirm you have high gear with the normal eprom? I can not repro this in MAME
Issue 2, seems strange that it starts sometimes without hitting the gas pedal. The code looks for the value of the gas pedal to be higher than zero... maybe that is too sensitive
Issue 3, this seems normal
Issue 4, seems related to issue 2
Issue 5, This was a bug that I fixed
Issue 6, you should never see the "push start" screen. The game should stay in attract mode when coins have been dropped and just start when the gas pedal is pressed (may also be related to issue 2)

I uploaded a new version that may work better on real hardware.
Thank for testing it, this is good stuff

I am not sure how to confirm which romset the board is running.
Whats the fastest way to do this?
-----
1) Yes I put the original back in and I do have high gear with mine.
2) Infact the game/credits just loop around, When one game is finished it starts another automatically. Very seldom does it wait for the gas pedal input.
3) Ok
4) Ok
5) Great
6) Yep the screen is there...
-----

Now I have another issue after returning the board to stock. I fried something in the middle of a kick arse game and I was crushing it! Anyway it should just be one of the ar2-1 but man did it stink. I don't have time this morning to effect a repair. So my pole1 is down for the time being. I guess its time to take my stock machine and do some of the mods to it.

I'll be back... lol

On issue number 2.......

Put your game in test mode and see what the accelerator input shows when you are not pushing on the pedal. Mine is an unstable 00. It seems to flip back an forth between 00 and two letters (pedal down max.). It doesn't seem to effect game play that I can tell but if the new program is looking for anything other than 00 to start then this may cause issue #2.

Now I just need someone to burn the PPII ROM for me. I wonder if it will have the same problem #2 as the PPI being talked about on my game?
