need some MAME info and ideas

yeah but then you have to add in the please dont mame this comment.

No i didn't. I explained to you what this forum is about, and why you weren't getting the responses you were looking for, and even pointed you to a great place for all things mame. Yet you still go about insulting everyone here, even the one that actually took the time to explain to you what was up.

Bottom line is this - me and Frizz both tried to explain to you why your not getting what your looking for, and yet you've still not comprehended it.
I'm done. You can bicker with yourself for all i care.

I pretty much got a MK2 cabinet with a KI cp with brand new happ buttons and joysticks mounted and wired ready to go. Just curious what kind of pc power I would need to be able to run this with no glitches or slowdown on anything MAME related IE the street fighters that are known for slowing things down, etc. Also do I need a Jpac adapter and if not how do I hookup my PC to this arcade monitor? Would also like some links to where I could dl the latest MAME bootable image.

Get the fastest PC you can afford. There will always be some slowdown somewhere. There isn't a PC made that can play all the games full speed.

Get either an Arcade VGA or one of the cards that Soft 15KHz supports /fully/.

A JPAC will allow a plug-and-play experience - highly recommended. And will use your cabinets existing JAMMA wiring.

The newest Mame can always be downloaded @ http://www.mamedev.org.

And I can't recommend the BYOAC forums enough, but I am a bit biased. :)

Thanks for the input. My current desktop gaming rig has a core 2 duo oced to 3.2 and 4gb of ram with a 8800gtx as well and I play mame on it just tinkering and ive yet to experience any slowdown at all so I wouldnt say there isnt a pc made that cant run mame without slowdown after ive seen it with my own eyes. Im just more curious of those that have a mame built and what their system specs are and if they are experiencing slowdowns to kind of gauge what motherboard, cpu, ram and gpu i may consider using for this build. Ill check out BYOAC as well, thanks

Play San Francicso Rush and see if you have slowdown.

remember playing that a few weeks back on my desktop rig and it played just fine.
Asus P5N-E SLI
C2D E6400 oced to 3.2Ghz
10000rpm WD 1TB HD
BFG 8800GTX
4GB PC6300 Corsair XMS2

Like I said earlier Ive yet to experience any slowdown even with the street fighters on this rig but was curious to see if anyone else has experienced it on say a slower rig. Since this is my main gaming rig, even though its a 2 year old build it still plays any game PC or MAME without slow down. Yes even crysis plays at a brisk 40fps on this rig. Just didnt wanna give it up for a MAME build but wouldnt mind building something similar but the price of C2D MB's and CPU's havent really dropped a whole lot in a year or so.

Try Cruis'n World and see if you have any slowdowns. If you can run this or Crusin'n USA without any slowdowns, I'm impressed!

I tried that one I remember but couldnt play it much because of the steering wheel input, ill have to test on that one I guess and see but I think I had 2 versions of cruisin usa and one of those ran nicely though the graphics werent all that great looking on my lcd for some reason. Im dling the newest revision of MAME and new romsets now and Ill report back with screenschots and maybe FPS as well if I can get fraps to work with this. Im pretty confident this rig will run it without slowdown so we shall see.

To be honest though, im not going to be doing any racing games on this MAME build because Im not gonna mount a wheel on it. Just a 8 way stick and 6 button controls so slowdown from cruisin world or san fran rush wont matter on this build.:)

according to fraps it stayed pegged at 29fps which is its max look in the upper right hand corner and you will see the fraps counter. The graphics kind of suck on this one though and this was cruisin world in MAME. No slowdown whatsoever. I would also like to add that I have several apps running in the background and 2 torrents going while I was taking that screenshot as well and IE open and NOD32 antiv. If anyone else has something they would like to see tested please let me know.

People complain about cabs being MAMEd. Now if these same people would step up and buy these cabs when offered here before e-bay or craigslist then they could "save" them. A friend of mine sold an empty MK cab to a guy for a MAME project awhile back and I think he offered it here first and got no offers from any "arcade preservationists" here. Point blank he needed it out of his garage. It was either sell it or break it up for the dump. The guy that bought it doesn't plan on painting over it in case sells it and the next buyer wants to convert it back...but they would have to buy ALL the internals including a monitor in order to do that. I also agree the MKs were made by the thousands..so you can find them...you just have to pay the price for it if you want to keep it away from a MAME conversion.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy saving classic games as well.. but really there are many more games out there that need to be preserved. What about the B&W games from the 70's? OR the electro mechanical games from the 60s on back? Occassionally there is a thread about a Pong but how many of you have passed up a B&W game at auction because you were hunting a Galaga or Centipede? Everyone is looking for their favorite games..so those are the ones that will live on the longest. Older and less popular games will just end up being an entry in the KlOV database.[/rant]

I totally agree.

mame needs at least a 2.0 ghz p4 or better 1 gig of ram and a cheapo 128 graffix card to play all the playable games
no matter how good your pc is the newer 3d games will play slow or have weird soud problems
i buld mame rigs on a regular basis and know from experince

latley i have been buying a package deal from micro center thats a 2.2 ghz celron single core (775) and a biostar monterboard for 59$ (after 10$ rebate)
i then buy the cheapest graffix card i can find (latley its been a 256 8400 gs pci-e card for 29$) and a gig sitck of ddr2 667 ram

just recently mame has added support for using dual core cpu's (starting at build 129 )but i still see no boost in speeds over a 2.2 single or dual core

eventually mame will probaly fix the newer games and that will boost the needed specs but for now the above works perfect

dunno, ive played the latest build on my duo and have yet to see ANY slowdown on anything ive yet to play. Granted my rig is a bit overkill i will agree to that.

Just to add to this post....

I have a Pole Position that has everything in it except the monitor and the boardset is bad. I mamed this puppy. All of the controls can be changed back to original EASILY!. I currently have about 6 different games that I can play on it. Tempest on a PP cab? my foot gets cramps because that is the fire button.... for now

I also have a gyrus cab that was free. No monitor, a Time Pilot 84 boardset, and a way hacked wiring harness. The Cp was hacked with an extra button already. This puppy also got MAMED! over 1000 games and it is my test rig for my mame projects.

Who says mame can't coexist with Arcade Machines?

And I am looking for a gauntlnt series cabinet to mame as-well.

I am also working on making a Captain Kirks Chair and hooking that to my left over Daytona USA cabinet to mame!

I am using a regular outdated computer and I have never had any problems. I do enjoy the real machines as I have about a dozen between my brother and I!

the BYOAC is alot better to find answers to any of your mame questions. They have helped me out tremendously

I glanced through teh BYOAC forums and it seems its mainly for setting up the machine. Im needing more of a tutorial of how to get mame installed, setup with a front end and botting on the pc which I didnt really see any instructions for any of that on BYOAC though they have alot of good info about building a mame.

BYOAC is for everything you could ever think of that has anything to do with mame :) Look through the different forums. Start at the software forum or run a search. There is a TON of info on that site and LOTS of helpful people.

I use Mala as my front end for mame.

i use game ex as a front end it is way more easy to setup than all the others and will automaticly create lists for you (horz,vert,neo-go,capcom,classics,original and several others)
just install it and then point it to your mame dir and rom dir thats it
it also has a sweet built in juke box/movie player that plays anyformat as long as you install ffdshow also
here is their main page
(ps for some reason it takes forever to load their main page )
http://www.gameex.net/Default.aspx

on their site they also have a instant sheller app that will automaticly shell windows so that your pc will boot directly into a front end withhout any signs of windws at all
this can be used with any .exe file can even boot directly into regualr pc games
using the shelller also ends many unmneeded windows processes that eat up system page file and in turn will speed up mame on any pc
it can be downloaded here
http://www.gameex.net/Community/InstantShellerandshellingguide/tabid/73/Default.aspx

i think game ex is far better than any of the other front ends for its easy to configure menus and no hasse instlations others like hyperspin and mala take quite some time to setup custom lists and also will not display every game (hyperspin really sucks i cnat stand the wheel they use to list games it looks pretty tho )
think of it like xp vs vista vista is flassy and pretty but is a big pia (like mala and hyperspin) xp is stable works well and is easy to use (like game ex )

Can you play Gauntlet Legends without any slowdown? I still get a little slowdown on that one with a 4GHz C2D. Most games are playable at full speed with this processor though.

BYOAC will have pretty much any information you will ever need. A lot of the frontend developers are active over there as well.
