So I'm running a premade pi image and strangely every once in a while it just "dies". What I mean by that is all the files are still there but it just will not boot anymore. This has happened 2 or 3 times in the last couple of years. The only way I can it to boot again is to reflash the image to the micro sd and start from scratch. Which means I have to set it up again from square one, (reset all my in game retroarch settings, pi settings, control settings, resolution settings, favorites list, etc.) So my question is, are there specific files or folders I can pull from my currently working micro sd so that if (probably when) this happens again, I can just copy that file/folders over to my freshly flashed micro sd so that it will be setup just as it was before the crash?

I used to sell mame cabinets. I created the ultimate image at the time for raspberry pi. I was very proud of it. The problem is, people would contacts me two years later and say it stopped working. The problem is, I packed the image so tightly that settings changes, game saves etc. built up and took up the remaining memory.

If you create more space, your issue will go away I'll bet at least temporarily. Also, maybe experiment with save files etc. delete them and see if it comes back. Check file sizes from a. Fresh burn compared to one that doesn't work.

That actually makes sense. I probably over load it with game saves and such as I play different games.

I'd start by making a backup image of your configured setup and saving it on your computer. That way at least you don't have to start from scratch every time while you troubleshoot this.
There a tutorial on how to do this? I don't mess around with this stuff very often so I don't know where to begin to create the image although I'm sure it's rather simple.
