I'm in the process of restoring my Tron upright.

I'll be replacing the side art and interior L/R side art, but I'll be keeping the
OEM monitor shroud art because it's still in decent shape.

My question is this: I'd planned on just cleaning the control panel overlay like I've done with other games (Robotron for example) and it has it's share of 1980s "nostalgia" (aka cigarette burns near the start buttons, and wear at the rollover front edge) but now I'm not sure if I should just clean or replace it.

I don't have any real issue with the burns, but the front edge is kind of rough.

Should I keep the original, or go with a completely new overlay?

I'd say replace the overlay, I just happen to have a NOS one here:http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=245010 :)

seriously though, it comes down to personal preference. One thing about the tron control panels is they have those little dents in them. I will be removing my old cpo, using bondo to fill in the holes, then sand it down and apply the new cpo after that, so I don't have to deal with the breaks in the shape of circles in my cpo down the road.

Funny you should mention the dents, because my CP has one on the right side, next to the joystick.

Still torn because it has that "lived in" look, but the rest of the cab won't when finished. :)

Anyone have any sources for the rivits used on the door to hold the Bally/midway metal plaque in place?

If you're going to restore the rest of machine to like new (or keep the pieces that still look new), I wouldn't hesitate to replace the CPO. It'll stick out like a sore thumb.

+1.. just get the complete package from Phoenix....u won't be dissapointed!

I already have side art I bought a while ago. Looks like I'll be getting the overlay, insert art pieces and spinner decal. Thanks for the suggestions!

The phoenix arcade plastics are amazing! I thought they wouldn't be worth it when I first heard about them. But then I saw them in person when I bought my tempest. Unbelievable!

I fought with the whole, "Keep it original or replace" with my TRON for years because it was a very nice original. However I finally took the plunge and don't regret it one bit. I did the CPO, Joystick, and upper and lower plastics from Phoenix and it's a completely different machine.

I ended up getting the Phoenix overlay. I have my panel stripped and ready for install. I still have to Bondo the divots on the panel and then paint it. Still need to do some clean up on the stick shaft before I install the New shells.

Got one side of the cab stripped of the original art, now I need to strip the glue residue and then fill the imperfections, then on to the other side. Took me almost 2 hours to strip that side art off. Nasty, tedious job.
