Well, my Johnny Nero Action Hero resets on only one of the 3 possible story lines you can choose so I'm figuring the HD image has some corrupted sectors. I tried using the MAME CHD files to recreate the image, but the MAME dump is from a 40 gig drive and my drive is only 20. I'd really rather re-image the original drive than use a perfectly good 40 GB HD for a game with a 10 GB image. Does anyone have a drive they can use CHDMAN to dump for me?

Thanks. That would be great. Guess I got to figure out where to have you post it now...

It's the logical size of the CHD not the physical size that you need to be concerned with.
IIRC run CHDMAN with -info switch
Look at the Logical size - if it's over 20 gig then you certainlty need a larger drive to accomodate. So you understand just because a CHD may have a physical size of lets say 2 gig, it can easily have a 6 gig or larger logical size.
You'd be suprised how many games logical size is well under the physical size of the drive.

Yep. Need something larger than my 36.7 gig drive for the MAME CHD. The CHD is 700MB.

I finally extracted the data from the drive and have a CHD. The size on the drive was 18GB or so (as I recall). The .CHD is just under 700MB. I don't recall what size the drive was ( I recall seeing 20GB mentioned when extracting the image to .CHD. so maybe that was the drive size).

Question now is I want to put this on a CF to replace the drive. Do I just need to get a 24GB CF and write the .CHD to it? That is going to be an expensive CF it looks like.
Need to go back and check the on-disk size, drive size, etc., to be sure I have all the pieces I need to move forward.

Found this other thread: http://forums.klov.com/showthread.php?t=94127 that relates to this as well.

So I ran chdman -info on the .chd and it shows "Logical Size: 20,020,331,520 bytes" so 20 GB.

Yeah, because of the the way CHDMAN works, you end up basically copying the drive, bit for bit instead of just the game data we need. I'm betting the actual game data are more in the neighborhood of 10gb, but because they used 20gb drives when they made these games, we're stuck with that. At least your version is smaller than the one the MAME guys posted which was like 60gb on disk! Maybe someone who is smarter than us can figure a way to isolate the game data only...
