I pick up this cab over the weekend off of a CL add. It is basically a Gen II Sega Genesis unit that has been set in a cab with a joystick, three button controllers, a start and a reset button. The whole cab is themed out in a Gargoyles them (one of the games available for the Sega Genesis console system) and is stamped with the name Buena Vista (Disney?) on it. The cab has a slot in the CP where you can insert a Genesis cart. I can't seem to locate any information about this cab outside of a brief thread in the DP forums. If anyone has any info into the origins of this cab, please let me know.

Finally got around to trying to dig into this cab today and I am a bit confused on how to do so. I thought the back panel and CP were secured by security torx screws. I got the right bit today to remove these screws but still can't figure out how to get the back off. The top half of the rear panel stapled in place and the bottom half only appears to have two screws. Yet when I removed these, I still could not pull the lower section off. I don' want to damage the cab, so I want to take this slow.

With the CP, I was able to pull up the plex and overlay, but could not figure how to get the top half of the joystick off to remove them. I thought that the whole panel would pull out similar to what you see with a Golden Tee type cab, but it would not budge. I did see some pretty beefy flat-head screws under the overlay which might be holding it in place. Need to figure out now to get the joystick, plexi and overlay removed to get at it. Pics are below. If anyone has any ideas on how to get into this thing without damaging it, let me know.

There appears to be some kind of door on the right side of the front pedestal area, but can't figure out what this would be for or how to access it.

Still no word back from Sega or Beuna Vista Games on any history surrounding this thing. Here are some pics of the labels on the cab. Looks like it was built out of a Midway Cab.

It is definitely a real Midway cabinet. A search for "universal cabinet 40135" turned up this thread where someone is asking about a cabinet which has a sticker that says "Midway Universal Cabinet 40135".

It also appears to have been built by a company (Buena Vista Interactive) rather than just some guy, complete with professionally done artwork. That makes it an official arcade machine in my book (though apparently not a coin-op one). Maybe it should be added to the KLOV database?

I wonder what its purpose was. Some sort of promotional item for their game maybe? It's a very interesting machine. I'd like to know what sort of guts it has (if you can get it apart, take some pictures of the inside). Also, is the monitor a TV or a real arcade monitor? If it is a real arcade monitor, how did they interface the Genesis with it? Does the Genesis even output RGB at any point in its circuitry? I know the SNES did, but most (all?) consoles prior to it didn't.

The old MK's have that door also. Theres probably a latch inside at the top, release it and it should pop out. There might be a piece of lumber with a handle on it that slides out of that door, usually where the PCB and switcher are attached for easy access.

You can see the original midway sideart underneath the gargoyles sideart in the picture quoted directly above. On the kit cabinets midway sold, it had this stylish pink neon looking thing swooshing around the bottom of it, you can just see it peeking out of the front there.

Wow! Good catch!

still a cool conversion none the less.

I wouldn't say it is a conversion, at least not in the sense of converting one game to another. It looks like Buena Vista Interactive bought new, bare Midway cabinets, and made these "Gargoyles" machines out of them; either that or they hired Midway to do it for them.

I would like to know the background of these things, and I'd also like to know about the guts; especially the interface between the Genesis and the monitor.

is there any way that the control panel is visibly attached to the front of the cab underneath it, i.e. screws, latches, etc? my guess is you're probably gonna need to get that back door off to be able to get into the cab.

Buena Vista is/was an arm of Disney...

They did all the Disney TV series.

The fact that there is BV logo on it makes me think that it might have been used by BV for something... Instead of some fan Bullshit.

I'd wager it's just a regular TV hooked up with the AV cables.

Movie prop? TV Show prop?

Looks cool. Wonder if theres a SNES version?

I don't think that they would go to all that trouble to use as a prop... There would be no point in wiring the controls. And it would be more likely to use a prerecorded video than anything else.

I'm thinking more as a demonstration piece... Or in the BV offices...

Where is this cab located again?
