Just bought a firepower. Everything was working with the sound then it started acting up. It's playing the wrong speech and sound when you make some targets others work fine fine. Any idea's

Glennon:

The biggest issue with Williams speech sound boards are the ROMS. Be sure that all of the ROM legs on the speech and sound boards are NOT blackened. If they are, GENTLY pull them from their sockets and clea the legs with light sandpaper (400 grit), making them shiny. Replace, try again.

From there, we get into circuitry issues. let me know what you find.

Cleaned everything up and it is still the same. I tested all the sounds and everything seems to be there, Just have the wrong sounds and speech for some of the targets. Also no background sound. Everything was working fine then I finnished up a game and the sound never stopped. I turned the game off and then back on and that's when it started acting up. I'm thinking it's in the driver board or a connector. Anybody know of anything in the driver board that would cause this condition?

Some of the driver board solenoids actually are used to "poll" the sound board to drive the different sounds, so it is >possible< that the driver board could be an issue.

Reflowed the solder on the connector pins on the sound board and everthing worked for a minute except the sound was real low and the speech was normal even with the volume turned up all the way. Then it went back to the problem I have been having. I ordered a sound and speech board from pinballpcb.com. Still would like to get this one going though.

PM sent regarding your non-working boards.

Would love to know how your progressing with your sound problem on your Firepower. Have you been able to get it working?

VB,

Here's where Ikm at. I bought a new Mpu/Driver board from Rottendog. No change in the situation. Also ordered a sound/speech board from pinballpbc.com and should be getting that this week. I'm hoping this solves the problem as I don't believe anything else could cause this. Before anyone says connectors I have repinned them also with no change. Well now I have a spare Mpu and Driver I know are good. I'll keep you posted when I get the new sound board.

I have to admit that I'm not very good with working on boards as I'm an Em guy. This old sound board will give me a chance to learn without much risk of screwing up anything important

If you ever run into a problem again with early Williams stuff, please consider sending me the boards. I have factory testers and both System 6 and 7 game platforms in which to play test boards, and could have had you up and running/repaired for far less than all these new boards. Regardless, you should be good to go after this - hope this gets you going.

Thanks for the responses. I had planned on buying a new Mpu/Driver board from the minute I bought the game. I want this thing to be bullet proof.
