Need Help with my FREE GALAXIAN.

Someone have knowledge on the Galaxian Test Rom. Does it matter that my Galaxian is Midway. Thanks Travis.

With ROM questions, I always check here first. http://www.solvalou.com/subpage/arcade_roms/G/tst_galx. That's the page for ROM sets in Galaxian. From what I can see, it replaces the ROM at 7F (assuming the ROMs are named in that format).

You can check the DIP settings as well, per ROM set... http://www.solvalou.com/subpage/arcade_dips/G/tst_galx. That's just an example, as the test roms don't have an settings it seems.

Plug that into the MAME version and see what you get, should work. If not, just repost and I'll tinker with it on my end to see what I can get. I don't have the Galaxian ROMs on my MAME machine (old school xbox), but I'll pop them on there and see what I can get.

Tried it on mame 142 but all I get is rom/chd missing. I tried it about 4 days ago using the namco galaxian set 1

Just tried on the xBox (going to be a shit version of MAME), and it worked for me... well, ran anyways... I don't think the test ROM works as it should in MAME. But it did run... it has some dependencies in MAME though, I think it requires the Namco Set 1 ROMs to be in the same folder. Easiest way to be sure is to download every set of Galaxian ROMs and put those .zip files in the same folder as the "tst_galx.zip" file, then you should be able to run the test ROM in mame as a normal game... But I don't think it's going to do much for you in MAME. All I got was a screen full of flashing 0's with a high pitched tone..but that might be all it's supposed to do? No idea. So much easier to just burn it to an EPROM and replace the (I'm guessing) U (7F on Namco boards?) with that EPROM. The worst that can happen is nothing (assuming you use the correct type EPROM).

The other day I programmed a chip and tried it in the daughter board @ u. and I even removed the daughter board and tried it still no go, acted like no roms at all. this is on a midway board. Thanks Scucci for testing the rom on your end.

have you changed the sockets to the rom board yet
It is the #1 thing to do with galaxian boards.

I would start with the sockets. That is what I am doing to about 5 Galaga boards and the Galaxian boards are the same way.

If you just want to try to get something use a pink pet type eraser and clean the pins on the eproms but I really suggest to replacing the crummy sockets.

Just waiting on some sockets.

Just wondering if there is any progress on this?

replaced 3 sockets on rom board that I had already, but no change. Even burnt some new roms. Been probing ic's with a logic probe, trying to better my knowledge of trouble shooting.

One thing I haven't thought of checking until I started reading here is your clock. You need to check the crystal and make shure there is a signal on the z80 chip. Without this, the chip will never start. Also check pins 7-15 on the cpu for pulse (not pin 11). Just keep looking for pulses on the cpu and data lines. My schematic is terrible but there is a chip a 9b I think it is a 74ls245 it goes from the cpu bus to the io main data bus. I would start there as that should be a busy bee.

pins 7-15 pulse when the watchdog is bridged. If i don't bridge the watchdog 7-15 are still pulsing, but the reset keeps going high and low. Assuming I'm reading my probe(Knight 610b) right. Pin 6 (clk) is pulsing as well.the crystal has a pulse to.

Now that the weather is a bit lower, I will do some testing on my boards. I have a few sets of these boards and I got one set "working blind". I can probe my working board and let you know what it is doing. If I remember right, this reset should start low and go high.
If your board has the older resistors and ic sockets, Time to buy a renue kit as this is number one on board failure list.

I have won a new board off of e-bay untested for $14.75. Plug-ed it in and I get BAD RAM 1,so I'm going to check the trouble shooting guide and see if I can get it going. IF I'm lucky, and fix this one maybe I'll be able to compare the two and fix my first board.

Update

Board 1, the one that came with the cab is up an runnin. All it needed was a new CPU,the z80 out of the other board works just fine.So I guess $14.75 is kind of high for a z80. But at that price I have an extra board, manual and Schismatics. So now I know for the second board I need a cpu, sockets for the ram, and 2114 ram, if I'm lucky that should do it. A question for you all. What is the best way to fix the main connector on this board. The problem is I keep losing the blue and red colors on screen,if I mess with the wires just right they come back. Thanks for your time Travis B.

If you need z80s, pick up a few non-working Gallag (bootleg galaga) board, there are like 4 of the things on there. ;p

Monitor

Ok, now that I have the game up and running, I need some help with the monitor. The tube itself is burn bad, I had to remove the tinted plastic so I could see the game. I have a cap kit for the chassis (WG k4500), so that's my next project.I have a question for you smart people has anyone done a tube swap with this chassis.I have a 19 sanyo with the same pin config on the neck board and was thinking about trying to swap the tube and the yoke. I would have to use to old yoke because it is an oddball that matches the k4500. Has anyone tried this before?

get a new monitor
the 4500 is a beast and will give you alot of problems
this would be a tube swap from hell
it is not a standard yoke
it has alot of areas of failure.
trust me on this one.
if you though your board repair was hard this will be insane and you will prob be right back you are today in a year.

I was guessing that this would be the answer. The problem is no money for monitor and chassis right now. I have looked at the yoke and it looks like 3(H,H,V) different winding, not 2(H,V) like every other monitor. But I might give it a go,after all I already have a cap kit. I think this should be easier to do. Then I will try a tube swap for the fun and knowledge I will gain. Keeping in mind that I will replace the monitor and chassis when the right one show's up at a cheap price.
