First off thank you edweird13 for the Cab. I first thought that the monitor had crapped out could not get picture only 3 lines down the center. After playing with it,I now know there is a switch that is bad. The Service/Normal switch. ? #1,does anyone know what type of switch I need to replace it with. ? #2 most all the pots on the chassis don't work (tint,color,brightness,ect.....) Would a cap kit fix this or does it sound like a bigger problem, the Chassis is a Wells K4500. ?#3 The game board powers up and shows all 0's across the screen.I'm guessing maybe a bad chip? I have no logic probe or eprom reader/writer. The only tools I have is a fluke multi-meter and a solder iron. Any info or thoughts would help. Thanks Long Hair.

Go to mikesarcade.com download and print out Galaxian troubleshooting guides 1 & 2. For all zero's on screen guide sez bad RAM at 3h. Could be a combo of things, but start with that RAM

Sometimes chips on the PCB become loose or dirty, grab a chip puller tool, clean the legs reseat the chips. clean the edge board with an eraser. Most likely that won't cure it but worth a shot. Most likely a bad RAM / ROM. Just an idea, If you have access to a working and very common original Pac-Man PCB it uses a similar pinout so you can at least test your monitor.

After looking at the trouble shooting guides, I believe the 74LS367 @ D-8 and or 7-E could be my first problem. When I power on the game I get a high pitch sound and crap on the screen. So I have a starting point, And I noticed that it takes the monitor 30sec to 40sec to get a picture. The tube has bad burn-in, So would it be better to replace the monitor and chassis or try to find a tube to swap? Thanks Long Hair

Anyone have an opinion? Someone know a thing or two about the k4500 chassis, just want to know what would make the monitor take so long to display a picture, and what could fix the controls not working(brightness,contrast,tint,ect..) all on the add on board. The one control that does work on that board is the Vertical hold?

After replacing the 74LS367 @ D-8 and 7-E the screen when all green,no red or blue now, and I still have the high pitched audio. I Have also replaced the rom chips @ U and Y, Checked them with my reader and they were both bad. Still have the high pitch audio, but if I power it on and off quickly the tone changes and I can see movement on the screen and I can hear the coin counter clicking. But it won't coin up or start.Someone have an idea where to go from here? I'm all ears. I now have a Logic probe and when I power it off and on quickly the watchdog does not come on. Maybe a short somewhere? Thanks Long Hair.

How do you know that you would have this problem 32 years into the future? Do you have a Delorean?

Andrew

Apparently not a good one... heading back another 30 years or so and it'd be easy to just call them up and ask for help from the people still designing the boards. ... This thing must be in a museum by now? Then? ... Then? I just blew my own mind.

Not sure about fixing the boards, though... first thing I always check is the easy stuff. Cold joints, broken traces, verify the EPROMs, etc etc. If transportation is easier in the future, look future me up and see if I still have my equipment. Just have me teleport over with some stuff, I'm sure I'd be more than willing to help. I can't do that now as transportation in the early 2010's really sucks ... Unless I'm dead. Am I dead? Am I? How did I die?! No... wait wait... don't tell me, that'll just take away the flavor of time I have remaining...

i dealt with the K4500
first of all you have a working monitor, due to seeing zeros.
so as for right now dont mess with it.
Get the board working first.
Usually it is a problem with the rom board espically the sockets.

Again get the board working first, dont touch the monitor. Trust me.

ps most of the swithches do nothing, in my opinion get a new monitor i will explain why latter.

OK. I here you loud and clear. I have a cap kit,but I'll leave it be for now. I fixed the color loss issue, I had added solder to the edge connector and had to much on the green. After evening it all out, the red and blue came back. I found an old ibm I had in the garage and found a 2114 ram chip. Replaced the 1 @ H3 because of the 0"s on the screen, but that did not fix may problem. Still have 0's and the tone in the audio. Sometimes the screen will have different garbage than the 0's.
Maybe 8-M 74LS138 Continuous Tone sound - Bit & Bytes cover entire screen. This is the closest that I could fine in the trouble shooting guide.

Tried replacing a few more chips (ram), but that did nothing. How can you tell or know if the Z80 is bad. Sometimes the watchdog kicks in, if I power it off and on quickly the watchdog kicks in and than it stops pulsing and goes high.

have you changed the sockets to the rom board yet
It is the #1 thing to do with galaxian boards.

No. Guessing I need to because most the legs on the rom chips are dark in color. I would like to do the 1 rom chip mod,but think I should get it going first. That's the only reason why I have not replaced all the sockets. Didn't want to do extra work if I wasn't going to use the rom board. But maybe I need to.

+1
I would replace all the sockets on both boards while you are at it and clean the pins on all socketed chips and go from there. If the sockets are really rotted the the rom pins tend to break off when you pull them...

well if it is me
i put the time in to fix it right.
taking shortcuts will only make you fix it sooner.
you need to check every wire, connector, everything very closely.
and if you think it looks weird or not right fix it now.
i have done that to all but 1 of my machines and guess which one i am always fixing.
You on the right track just fix the board first and do it right or pay someone to do it right, then go from there.

Galaxian Test rom

Could someone give me some info on the Galaxian Test Rom. A quick How to on where to put the chip, what it should do, and what I will learn from it. I downloaded the rom and tried it in mame, but it would not run. What do I need to do. The only Eprom's I have are tms2516's,that should work,Right? Thanks Long Hair.

Someone have knowledge on the Galaxian Test Rom. Does it matter that my Galaxian is Midway. Thanks Travis.
