Hello, I was wondering if you can give me some technical advice on my 1980 space invaders deluxe.

I belive I have what its called " horizontal collapse" of my monitor. I have just a single vertical dotted moving line down the center of the screen.

I do have some experience with using a soldering gun.

Are there any known quick fixes for this?

thanks in advance

Mark

Grab the schematic diagram and look at the vertical output circuit. Most likely you have a bad cap or a yoke connector with a broken/burnt soldering connection.

You really have vertical collapse. Remember, the monitor in Space Invaders is rotated 90 degrees, but it's still operates the same way, it's just mounted sideways. So, your vertical line is really a horizontal line, and the failure is the vertical deflection.

Start by checking the easy stuff, the deflection yoke wires sometimes come off or get broken on these. If not, start checking over the vertical circuit, something has failed or there is a bad connection somewhere.

Well I ordered a Capanalizer 88A this weekend - the reviews are impressive.

I figured it will not only help me with my space invaders- but I will put it to good use on other electronics along the way.

The more I read up on electronic repair, it seems -9 times out of 10 its a bad cap.
