I've seen two kinds of those lighted switches/buttons. One is as you mention, slight twist and pull out the lower light with switch part. The other you do not twist you just pull out. both generally have been a bit of a pain IMO and usually take more force to get out than I want to use. Probably stuck from many years of just sitting. Haven't broke one yet but still a bit sketchy.

ive tried twisting (with pliers) and prying both to the extent i think im going to break them and they wont budge. do i break the old ones out to install the new ones?

If you have those particular led buttons you need to twist the led assembly to the left to unsecure it, it should just pop out if it has been installed properly. If you hold the led assembly and it will not turn at all, then you may have another type of led assembly or it may been installed wrong somehow, the old 8 liners have a very similar assembly that just pulls straight out and snaps straight back in.

for future searches: the oem buttons pop straight in and out (with lots of persuation) and the aftermarket ones twist.

Yes. I have ordered the twisted quarter LED buttons numerous times. They twist then pull out. Sometimes they get a little sticky on the twist.

I've had problems with the TQ LEDs burning out within a span of 6 months.
