I just picked up a 48 in 1 (Japanese board) in a DK Jr. Cab.

Here's the problem I'm having.

To enter test mode you need to put dipswitch 4 to the on position and then the machine starts up in test mode. The joystick and buttons do not have any control over this mode and I have no way to make the changes. Can anyone tell me what to do to get the controls to actually control test mode like they should?

Thanks,
Ted

You need a test and service switch wired up if you want to page through the different test screens on the 48-in-1. Having a test and service switch also means you won't have to use the DIP on the board to get into test mode.

Switch 2 and Switch 3 page through the menu if you use the Dip switch. Service and Test page through the menu if you use the test button to access the menu.

If your joystick and buttons work in gameplay, then they will work in your menu using Dip Sw #4. You need a 2nd button to make changes though.

If it won't work in the menu, then they probably don't work in a game either. In that case, check your wiring to your control panel - specifically the grounds.....

The joystick and buttons do work in gameplay but not in test mode.

I don't understand why.

If there is no way to get them to work in test mode then I need to find out how to wire a button that I can use in test mode.

I have an extra button like the ones used for fire buttons, micro switch actuated, will that work?
How would I use one button? Don't I need to be able to chosse menus, move from item to item and then enable my choice?

Actually, you use the joystick to move your box around the OFF's and ON's at the top of each screen, and your buttons to make changes, switch screens, and save...

OK, the first thing I need is a new 4-way joystick.
This is in a DK Jr. Cab, so what's a good 4-way joystick that I can fit in there that looks original but works better than the one in there now which is too loose, has no feeling and is hard to control? I wonder if that's not the issue?

The controlls work in the games but they DO NOT work when it is in test mode.
When I flick the #4 dipswitch it takes me to a video test pattern on the screen. I can hit any buttons, joystick direction and nothing happens.

Can someone help me with this?
The volume is set to deafening and all the games are too easy. I need to find a way to make the controls work in test mode.

Please.

sounds like you need to wire in the service and test button and stop trying to get into it via the dip 4...

look at a jamma wiring map... www.therealbobroberts.net

and you will see which two wires you need to hook to a button each.... the other side of hte button gets wired to ground..

then press the button when powering it up and hold the button in..

it should then boot to the test or service screens...

then navigate to settings from there... also you can adjust the volume in the setup menu as well...

How many buttons are on your control panel? Once you get that test grid screen, the 2nd button on your control panel is used to advance through the screens. If you only have one button, that's why you can't do anything....

You need to hook up the test switch to navigate to next page, and the next one and so on. I have never tried without a test switch so if there is another way maybe someone on hear will correct me. Once you have wired up a test switch and even the service switch(the service switch lets you back up a page if needed, makes things alot easier):

Turn on machine while holding the test switch for a few seconds. You will see alot of text on the screen, release test button.

Your first screen is video test, press test switch to next page.

This page has cabinet type setup and attract mode sounds etc. You can also turn games on and off on this screen. The bottom of each page will tell you which button to press to make selection. After you have made desired dip settings press Player 1 start. This will save your settings. I do not think the manual is very clear on that step. Then press test that will take you to your first game setup screen. Make all your dip settings then press Player 1 start to save. Press test to go to next 47 games. Remember the service switch will back you up a page if you made a mistake. Thats why it would be a good idea to hook that up as well.

If your game controls work normally than all your controls should work in setup mode.

There is a screen at end of setup that lets you toggle all switches and joysticks to verify they are working properly or loose like you had said. I am sure the joystick is ok though.

I do not mean to step on toes at all with this response. I am just trying to give some help because I had to figure this out a couple of years ago without a 48-1 manual.

The reason he can't make changes via dip sw #4 is because his control panel doesn't have a second button...

Yeah, I agree with Modessitt. I recently installed a JAMMA cab adapter in my Gaplus, and installed a 48-in-1. Gaplus only has 1 fire button, and I'm not hacking the control panel (even though the CPO on it isn't original, it's close). All I could get via the dip #4 was the test color grid. I ended up just running a wire to the button #2 on the 48-in-1 board, and while I was setting up the board, just touched the other end of the wire to one of the GND wires on another button. There's really only one game with a 2nd button on there that I'd play (Qix) anyway. My cab has a service switch too, but I couldn't get it to do anything when I went into test mode that way.

if you're going to do that, just wire the test wire to your P2 Start button (not the ground). Then you can hold down P2 start to boot to test, push P2 start to advance screens, push Fire to make changes, and push P1 Start to save. And P2 Start will still work normally in gameplay...

Yeah, I thought about that...but the wires were soldered on and I can't find my soldering iron :D The other thing I thought about doing was adding the 2nd button, but just leaving it inside the coin door in case I need to make changes. I may end up hooking it to the player 2 button though, as then I could use it for games like Qix. (even if it's a bit away from the fire button)

Thanks everyone for the help.
I didn't know that I needed a 2nd fire button.

The guy I bought the machine from is coming in next weekend to "correct" the situation for me.

Thanks again for all your help.

Ted

Well that's just it, you don't "need" the second fire button.
I never put that button in any of the machines I've put together. (only a handful mind ya)

What you do need is the TEST and SERVICE switches as mentioned already.
There is also a volume control in that setup menu..... once you can get to it of course.
Once you can enter the setup menus via the TEST or SERVICE switched you can also make the appropriate dipswitch changes for each individual game with the joystick and S1 fire button which you already have. (change difficulty, etc)

Be sure to SAVE all changes too before exiting the setup menus.
Sucks when you forget to and have to go back through and do it all over again.

Is there a scan of this manual around ?
If not I'd be glad to scan one I have for those that come looking for it.
