I've been searching for the name of an arcade game that I saw in my youth for a while now, and haven't been able to come up with anything. Back in the 80's or possibly early 90's I remember seeing a unique game that sported a keyboard interface along with Dragon's Lair-esq animated graphics. I assume now it was some sort of Laser Disc game based on the graphics alone, but I can't be certain of that.

I can't recall if it was a full keyboard or only a partial letter set with some other game specific keys.

I don't remember much about the gameplay (I was only about 12ish when I saw this, and never did really figure out what you were supposed to do). I have vague recollections of the game having something to do with mastering the elements (learning to use fire, water, etc...) and I beleive it had a medival theme too it.

Does this ring any kind of bell with anyone?

Yes, Thayer's Quest, as Dek mentioned.

You can find pictures and all kinds of other stuff on Thayer's Quest at my website. Here is the direct link to the Thayer's Quest page:

It's one of those games that you either love or hate. There doesnt seem to be an in-between. I love the game. I have one in my collection.

Enjoy,

from the Thaye'rs Quest Wikipedia site...

"Due to many parent complaints of their children entering obscenities that were then spoken by the machine, and also the sometimes slurred early voice synthesis that was mistaken for offensive language, Thayer's Quest ended up being banned in several arcades."

NICE!

Hmm... I've never heard of that story. Thats funny.

There was, however, provisioning in the original code to prevent this kids from doing just that. About 10 years ago, fellow D-L-Per Jeff Kulczycki (yes.. the same Jeff that created DK2) disassembled the Thayer's Quest ROM data and came across a list of "bad words" that the game would not say. The list of words was quite amusing! But, I'm sure the resorcefull 13 years olds were able to create new ways to make Hal say swear words.
