I was never into handheld gaming, but recently my son has been hounding me wanting a DS. Sorry, I'm not buying my 7 year-old a DS. If anyone is getting a DS, it would be Dad. But, I wouldn't be against letting him and his brother play with a Gameboy.

So I was thinking a Gameboy Color or Gameboy Advance (the horizontal one) could be picked up for pretty cheap.

Can you guys give me a few recommendations as to where to get one? EBay? (I hate eBay) Gamestop? One of you guys? What should I be looking to pay? What in particular should I be looking for as far as problems with them?

I'm headed to the flea markets this weekend and there's usually a decent selection of games, but rarely any handhelds.

Thanks for the help Gentlemen.

Personally, I picked up a GBSP, a long time ago. I got it when it had the "classic" series that was released. I picked it up cause I used to have an hour lunch and in the winter, it was fun to play a little SF II or Dr Mario, as a tension breaker.

Now, my kids have it and love it. However, it wont be long until it's not "cool", anymore. My 7 yr old has already expressed interest in the DS, cause "other kids have it". My son is an absent minded professor and he would misplace it.

Hope this helps, Jon.

Yeah, I saw some GBSP's on CL and eBay and some were priced right and some were way out there. Luckily, he just likes playing games right now, so the coolness factor hasn't set in yet. So, what- $40 for a used, working GBSP?

We have some in stock for $40 and I'll ship it for free if you want. You can paypal [email protected] if you're interested. We currently have black, blue and silver... The silver one's kinda scratched up though. They come with a charger.

I recommend them for small kids all the time, they can take a beating and games are cheap.

We also have the older gba's for $25 and GBC for $20. If you really want to be mean, we've got original monochrome gameboys for $20 as well :)

$40 isn't really that spectacular for a SP. I've bought several recently closer to $15-25. Heck, I just sold two for $35 (for both, with one charger). But, maybe I'm cheap. I've just been working on getting a variety of colors.

There are two model SP, AGS-100 and AGS-101. The 100 will be cheaper, and has a front lit screen, so the colors appear more washed out, but overall not that bad.

I would recommend an SP over a standard GBA any day. The screen closes, so it is much harder to damage. I've seen several orignal GBA end up with busted LCDs, and far fewer of the SP with that problem.

lukiegames.com

place where I buy all my classic games, usually cheaper than ebay because free shipping over $25 which is bomb, every order also nets a 10% off coupon and his email list has em all the time to

GBA Horizontals for like 25$

get the poor kid a ds. ;) it is not like he is asking for the $250 3ds.

you can get the ds phat pretty cheap now I think. it plays ds and gba games.

gba sp is great for a kid, and any game that is not pokemon should be cheap. game boy micro is pretty cool also

I personally get a gba sp. Cooler looking and like Mindl3ss said, harder to damage. Tons of great games for it as well. I'm still looking for a NIB or mint gba sp classic nes version...which is the absolute coolest version imo.

Thanks guys- I actually picked up a GBA SP today at the flea market for $30. It included a leather case, charger, headphones and a game. The guy didn't realize a game was in it- not really a big deal, the game is Monopoly. But, it's brand spankin' new. Not one scratch on it and the screen is really bright and clean!

Now, I'll be looking for a few cool games for him...

OK, next question! :)

Has anyone used a mod chip in their GBA? I saw somewhere that you can emulate NES games. I would love to be able to play the NES games on this. Is this easy to do? What do I need to do this?

it should be as simple as a micro usb and just loading the roms onto it like any other flash cart, simple!

Seemed like that's how it should be but it looked like you need some kind of linker device which was going for over $100. NES games aren't that important.

ah ya know what, I just looked on the one site that I had bookmarked and I think they work with the ds cart as well. both of them together, my fault, thought I would throw it out there
