I've pretty much done every repair and upgrade to this machine over the last year. It's been running sweet. It's running in a public arcade that's open 4 days a week. Every now an then, I have to pull the shifter to re-solder a wire that's fallen off due to the abuse the stick gets.

A couple weeks ago, I saw the red alert dot on screen again, so I pulled the shifter, and 2 wires were broke off the "left/right" switches. I soldered them both back on, fired up the game, and the shifter still wont work. I went into the control test menu, and it's only recognizing 3rd and 4th gear. No matter the location up, it always thinks it's 3rd, and no matter the location down, it always thinks it's 4th.

I swapped out the Nytric card in the PC, thinking the control chip went bad, and same thing. So I eliminated the nytric as the issues.

I then tested all the micro switches at the connector, and they tested out fine.

Not sure where to look next. This should be an easy fix, but I can't seem to figure out what the prob is.

Game works fine other than the shifter defaulting off, due to it not recognizing all the gear inputs. So basically it's set to automatic all the time.

Any suggestions?

check to make sure the wires arent smashed and shorting out when the lever is moved. i had the same thing happening and noticed the smashed wires due to the shifter being removed/reinstalled so many times.

I actually thought the same thing, so I checked continuity of micro switch operation at the molex connector inside the seat, which is about 18" past the shifter wiring. All checked out.

It has to be a wiring issue, but all the tests I've done come back with correct micro switch operation. I'm gonna have some time tomorrow to mess with it some more. It works fine for the arcade, and no one complains, but it's killing me I can't figure it out....

Finally figured this out. I'm working on getting 4 NFSU running and linked, so I put the shifter issue on the back burner. Figured I'd get to it when I was at the tweaking stage of all four machines.

The machine I'm working on now is a GT, that was never converted. When I connected an Underground seat, that shifter would only register 3rd gear up and 4th gear down, no matter the left or right position. Same as the issue I was having with the other Underground. I realized the GT cab was missing one of the upgrade harnesses. Lucking I had an extra one. I installed it, and the shifter started working correctly.

I figured the harness must have come unplugged in the Underground that I originally posted about. So I went over, disconnected the seat, and sure enough it was unplugged. Plugged it back in, and problem fixed. I circled where it come unplugged in the diagram attached.
