Need advice on buying the right part - 74ls161 IC chips for Stargate

I have been researching a video display issue on my Stargate, and am pretty sure I need to replace shift shift registers 1I through 4I.

I saw in a previous post a suggestion that I use 74ls161 chips as a replacement. The Stargate drawing set says these are 8-bit shift registers, but when I look up the part on Mouser.com, they seem to all be 4-bit.

Am I not looking in the right place?

That's what I am thinking, too.

Mouser is suggesting the 526-NTE74LS166.

It is 8-bit, so I am thinking that is the one to go with.

There is a thread about this somewhere. Somebody did replace the 74166s with 74LS166s and it worked, for about 20 minutes. Then one of the chips blew out.

The 1J-4J shift registers are NEVER used in an upright game. In a pinch, pull them to replace a bad one in 1I-4I.

I highly doubt an LS166 would blow up... there's only 1 TTL load hanging off it...

Thanks for the info.

Any special advise on de-soldering those chips, aside from keeping the temp low and using a fine soldering tip? I generally use a solder wick but can do a solder sucker if that is better.

I have a desoldering station, which is the best way...

Without that, I'd suggest cutting the old chip off the board and use the solder sucker to remove the pin and solder. It's too easy to lift pads when using braid.

Install a good dual-wipe socket then put the chip in.
