I have removed the damaged side art from my MOUSE TRAP cabinet and I'm looking for pointers on the best method to sand it before applying new side art.
I will be removing the t-molding before sanding and my plan is to use 120 grit to smooth out the surface scratches and remove the old adhesive. Is that sufficient or do I need to sand further with a higher grit?
I've never done this before so any help would be appreciated.

I usually fill any gouges and sand to about 180. Then the key is to seal that porous surface before applying the art. One way is as @rdudding mentioned.
What I do though is just seal it a spray clear coat

If you try to sand that you are going to be VERY sorry.

The surface needs to be as smooth as glass or your artwork is going to show every single imperfection underneath and look like total crap.

Laminate first or GTFO.
