nearly reaches full focus at the end of the flyback's focus pot travel, stops short

I recently bought an untested K7203, and have the problem from the subject line: focus gets better and better as I turn the focus knob on the flyback, but doesn't get fully clear. Everything else adjusts nicely.

I searched the KLOV forums and found a chap (IAML Supporter danpiraino1971) had a similar focus problem. He fixed it by swapping the tube. This tube has a ton of Pac burn anyway, so I didn't need my arm twisted to swap the tube. But after installing a new CRT, the focus problem persists.

I'm re-watching my Randy Fromm monitor repair DVDs today. Halfway though I suspect we're not going to cover this bit o' weirdness, so I'm posting for some advice.

Any suggestions for what I should try?
I have not yet recapped or re-flybacked it.

Quattrohead in the K7000 stickythread suggests a recap might fix this. Although it would be nice to isolate the problem rather than shotgunning, which in my experience hasn't worked out that well.

Oh yeah recap it and grab a new flyback security0001 has good flybacks and cap kits. That should clear you up.

Caps are one of the few components that you should shotgun them because all electrolytics go bad over time whether in use or not. due to the age of any arcade game monitor cap kits are a very common starting point even if its not necessarily the cause. (preventative maintenance).

And don't forget that Wells-Gardner used bottom-of-the-barrel, cheapest, crappiest capacitors on their monitors.

I cap any and every monitor working or not. It's really needed. It bulletproofs your monitor for 30 years +

OK thanks friends! All signs point to placing an order at AP&R.

Even though I hate shotgunning lately, at least I'll be starting from an even playing field if the problem persists. Thanks!

Yeah security0001 is a great guy. I recommend because he's awesome and his parts are awesome quality too.

I swore Ian Kellogg said you have to cap monitors every 3 yearsl. :001_scool:

if you have issues with focus it's not going to have anything to do with the caps, that's controlled by the flyback. as it pertains to caps though my rule is if you intend on keeping the game, you should do it. especially on K7000s. while you have it out you can concentrate on going over all the power resistors as well. or as Buffett would say, "give it a good reflow"
