NBA Showtime Reset problem

I was given a Vegas boardset and was told it had sportstation on it and it probably needs a new hard drive. After looking around the boards, it appears to be NBA Showtime.

Whenever I turn the game on, it goes to splash screen, says booting "PHX0:game.exe..." and resets, over and over again.

I'm not able to enter service mode, and the rom isn't labeled with the revision number.

I've checked the power supply and am getting the proper voltages at the gameboard. All the fans are working.

I tried creating new hardrives. Before I realized it was NBA Showtime I tried a Sportstation hard drive, and I've tried an NBA Showtime image burned on a hard drive.

Does this sound like a hard drive error? Would a bad rom cause this (or would it just hang or time-out at the rom check screen?) Is there a certain type of hard drive I need to use to extract the image to? Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

If your voltages are good I would highly suspect it is indeed your hard drive causing the issue. Just because you've made a new one from an image it's most likely the wrong image. I'l assume you know how to use CHDMAN then.
Even if the hard drive is bad you'll still see the boot prom info before it resets. Match up the Showtime ROM image with the PROM version and it should work.
On a side note, at some time or another someone told me certain drives will/won't work with the Vegas board set. I have no idea if there's truth to that or not as I've also changed over to Compact Flash cards to eliminate drive failures.

Without trying to sound rude, seems every time I answer a question about one of these it turns into a PM tech support session which does no one else any good so please do not PM me.

Thanks Deadly, I figured it was a hard drive issue, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything obvious.

When the game starts, the splash screen flashes with "$Revision 4 $" before it resets. I wasn't aware there were any revisions after 3.0? The CPU indicator rolls through all the numbers, but stays on 0, which is what it is supposed to be on I believe.

I'm comfortable using CHDMAN, but I don't know where to look for the correct CHD image, have any suggestions for that?

Far as I know the only versions were 1.5, 2.0, 2,5 and 3.0 being the Gold Edition. There was no version 4.

Well, the 3.0 we have in the shop keeps resetting too. It loads, gets to the game initializing screen then resets. Won't boot to test via dip switch. We have another HD on the way (might be there monday) so I'll let you know if it works. I replaced the HD a year ago due to a similar reset issue (worked on football but basketball made it reboot) and that fixed it...

It's funny, when I put the hard drive in that I made, on the boot screen it says revision 2, but when I use the authentic hard drive, it says revision 4 at the boot screen. It seems to be taking some sort of information from the hard drive when it checks the rom. Otherwise, maybe this means that the hard drive I used to burn the image to is not being recognized properly.

Additionally, I noticed that a pin had broken of the IDE connector (pin 2 - ground) on the main board. I rerouted the cable to pin 40 (also ground) but this didn't fix the problem (I didn't really expect it to). I'll desolder the connector and put a new 40 pin (minus pin 20) on before I try a new hard drive.

If I see one for sale, I may just try upgrading it to Sportstation, hopefully the combination of a new rom + proper hard drive will fix it.

Let me know how the new hard drive works mod. Also, let me know if you know of any identifiers on the rom that can help me identify which version I have.

Cheers.

the roms should have labels on them with version numbers..

BTW - I got the new HD in and everything is back to working perfectly...

Awesome, I'm hoping for the same.

I ordered an upgrade to Blitz/Showtime 3.0 with hard drive, I'll repair the 40-pin connector, and hopefully this solves it (and adds a game).

Thanks guys.
