I just bought this machine and everything works perfectly except there is no sound at all. I hear the chime when booting the machine and then I get Sound DRAM failed. The guy I bought it from said the sound was working until he had to replace the Power Supply.

I'm very new to all of this so I'm just looking to get pointed in the right direction. Would buying a new Sound Board be the way to go? Or could it be an issue with the Power Supply?

This game heavily loads the power supply. I'd verify that you have a solid 5v at the boards. Not sure of your technical ability, so my apologies if I'm being too basic. You'll want to measure the 5v with a multimeter at the boards. You can get a general idea of the 5v by measuring at the output of the power supply itself (screw terminals). Red lead on the multimeter goes to 5v+, black lead goes to one of the ground connectors (not the earth ground). You'll want between 5.0 and 5.1 volts on this rail. If it deviates at all, you can adjust the power supply with the knob, usually located on the same side as the screw terminals.

This is all assuming you have a standard switching arcade power supply in there. It should look like this:

Thanks for the reply and info. I'm just getting into the Arcade scene here so my technical knowledge with them is at it's lowest. But I'm definitely willing to learn here. I don't own a multimeter so I'll have to go pick one up but I should have no issue measuring the outputs like you suggested. I'll take a pic of the Power Supply but I assume it's a standard one like you said.

I did notice some flashing lights(some green, yellow, etc.) on the PCB so is there any thing I should be looking for there? With the Sound DRAM failing at boot what does that indicate typically?

The DRAM Failure might be a result of low power to the boards. There might not be anything wrong with the RAM, it might just be starved for power.

Start with the easy stuff. You mentioned the system hadn't worked since the power supply was replaced. It's possible it was never adjusted correctly for the load that is being placed on it by the elaborate system that Blitz/Showtime runs on (called the Vegas boardset). Failing that, the old power supply could have shorted stuff out (sent too much voltage to the boards) when it went... That's always a possibility.

But again, I'd start with the easy stuff. We'll ensure proper power first, and once that's been verified we will continue troubleshooting. :)

Just wanted to clarify that everything does work perfectly except for the sound. So from what you're saying it could very well be that the power supply was never adjusted correctly. I think I'll e-mail the guy who sold it to me and ask him about this. Starting with the easy stuff first makes sense =). I'll get some pics uploaded of the Power Supply by tonight.

low voltage shouldn't cause the "DRAM failure", worst case scenarios are the game will either not boot or if it does boot, it will reset.

commonly the input board (the one where the JAMMA harness plugs in) will get cooked in the power section on these.

I've found the easiest spot to meter on these is the hard drive power plug in the corner of the input board... I know this cause I've compared the voltage coming out of the red and black pins against a rom on the board and they output the same voltage.

I wound up replacing the input board on my Sportstation cause the +5 fingers on the JAMMA edge got burned up too badly and cleaning them wouldn't help at all. I was pushing 5.40 from the power supply and barely getting 4.70 out of the board components.

also, the system is elaborate, yes, but there's little voltage tolerance between what I'm feeding the board and what's reaching the components. I wanna say I have mine set to about 5.15 at the power supply and I'm getting a steady 5.09-5.10 at the board now. this game only requires no more than 5.10 to operate. I've seen Vegas boards function perfectly normal as low as 4.80 volts, so anywhere between 5.00-5.10 is healthy.

also, just because it's pretty obvious common sense stuff, make sure all your fans are working, especially the video card one. I put a high output Sunon 80 mm fan on mine.

I talked to the guy I bought this from again. He took it to a guy that does repairs and was told one of the chips on the main board is bad. I assume that is what would cause the DRAM Failure? How would I go about finding out what chip is bad and how to replace it(if possible)?

All of the fans are working great.

I don't know much about all of this but would it be possible to buy a NBA Jam/TE board and use it with this cabinet?

Have you checked the power supply yet?

No point in doing any in depth troubleshooting until you check that and verify that you have good power going to all the boards.

I know this is a old post. Just wanted make a post so this gets archived. The sound will not work with out a -5vdc. This is normaly the green wire pin 5 on the jamma connector. The game will Boot up and run find with out the -5vdc so dont be fooled.
